Mithuna, if DDR dogs with high drive are EXCEPTIONS, THEN they are NOT known for high drive....DUH!

I live in Alpharetta Ga which is about 30 mins north of Atlanta. As far as price i figure it will be somewhere in the $1500-$2500 range for a good puppy from one of the more reputable breeders. I am currently focused on one breeder (staatsmacht) that is US based and seems to have rave reviews and put out excellent dogs. Also i like the fact he doesnt need to sell me a dog which for me means someone who can be upfront and honest about the match of my needs to a dog. I have plenty of time so can wait for the right repeat breeding or for a pup that is a good fit. I appreciate all the info everyone has provided and look forward to any more.

If you want a Staatsmacht pup, then it would be a good idea to get involved in a local dog training club (maybe IPO) and learn so that you have some experience before talking to them about a purchase. Some breeders (not necessarily saying this one) have such a demand for their pups that they may only sell to persons with experience who will do something (IPO, etc.) with their pup. Besides, if you have some education from talking with people and seeing actual training (not just internet or book reading) then you are more prepared for that pup and will make less mistakes raising and training it. That is an excellent point, thank you. I do want to do IPO with the dog, in fact i had been to my local club several times a few years ago with my other dog but he just wasnt cut out for it. He did very well with the obedience though. Will definitely go by a few times from here to when i get a dog to get ready and as you said hopefully avoid as many mistakes as possible. Whomever i buy from i want it to be someone who trains as well so that i can have at a minimum their input on a trainer or preferably have them train him.

What area are you in (state)? There may be people here who can steer you in a good direction for learning, trainers to contact/watch and club(s) to attend.

Thank YOU for being such a receptive and polite enquirer - wish we could always have such sensible conversations with all newbie(ish) OPs ! Rather than the people who come on here with their minds already entirely made up, usually on the basis of nil experience, then sulkily start arguing when posters suggest things they don't want to hear. Bravo. Really hope u end up with a great choice of dog, and breeders look after you properly.

Hahaha yes i have seen that type of person on all types of forums. This forum is a wealth of knowledge and experience that can be an enormous help if used properly. I have every intention of doing that. Thats why i am starting to do my research and talking to breeders so far ahead of when i actually plan to get a dog. I figure that plus keeping an open mind so i can ask questions etc will net me the best result. Nothing less should be done when adding a new member to the family imo.

OP, from your posts it appears
that you would prefer a dog who will be well-balanced (with strong nerves) in terms of character, self-assured, absolutely natural and
(except for a stimulated situation) good-natured as well as attentive and willing to please, who should possess instinctive behaviour,
resilience and self-assurance in order to be suitable as a companion, guard and protection dog.

WL/SL/Czech/DDR/West German-- Any STRICTLY "bred to standard" dog is perfectly suitable for you.

And, any GSD, of whatever WORLD FAMOUS line, which doesn't fit in your requirement, is NOT a worthy specimen of the breed.
