If you are doing Scent Discrimination searches, and he is bringing back

cloths or articles, don't you have to get him to SIT and PRESENT anyway,

when you take each one from him ?  So how does that waste so much

time ?  If you are saying he brings one back, presents it ok, but then when

you send him away for the next article/scent cloth, he jumps around instead

of getting on with it, then surely much of the advice in this thred would apply

equally well, even if not for a Track.  Calming him;  changing your routines;

making sure he is really obedient to your commands;  even wearing him out

a bit before taking him in the Ring, all should help, whatever the Exercise.

Just because he finds and collects the first article okay does not mean he isn't

still OTT / a little 'out of control' in general, or you would not be getting the

difficulties with subsequent articles.  If he presents, comes to Heel to be sent

out again, but then bounces off as soon as released, you seem to still be at a

training stage (rather than a testing one), so I'd apply the "no reward, if you piss-

ball about and don't get on with the job" straightaway at that point, remove him

from the Ring or declare a Training Round, take the time to calm him then practise,

practise, practise.  You learn more with the 'difficult' dogs  Regular Smile.

Blitzen, she's in the UK. Different protocols.

Hi.

I`m in the UK and I`m talking about "Working Trials" where the dog has to track a half mile long track which is 2 hours cold. Also find 4 articles hidden in 25x25 yard search square in 5 minutes.

The other exercises in , UD WD and TD are a sendaway and redirect, a 6ft scale,9ft long jump, 3ft hurdle.

Obedience consisits of Walking to heel off lead with left and right turns, fast slow and normal pace, and sits.. A recall, a speak, Steadinesss to gunshot, retrieve a dumbell. The down stay for 10 minutes with owner out of site.

My problem is mainly with the search square and the dogs OTT excitement  which I have described in mt previous posts.

Obviously no-one has read my posts properly or does not understand about "working trials". Roll eyesGuess this forum is mainly folk from the US? But I thought it might be worth asking for some advice on this forum and thanks anyway.  I`m sure i will sort it out myself with my trainer although I was hoping to impress him by sorting it myself this time. LOL.  Roxanne.

So far as people on here reading your posts properly, perhaps if you had been more specific about the exercises in the first place we would have more insight into the difficulties you are having. Many of the posters on here are from N. America and the dog trials are different. And if you think that NONE of the advice given freely has been a help - well then I guess there's just no helping you.

Lol @ Koots :-)

Ok then, maybe there is a trainer in the UK who could help you?

I'm really not sure, Blitz, if Roxanna would benefit from another

Trainer's advice.  She has totally ignored my posts - from UK -

as though she can't see 'em;  and her reluctance to consult her

existing Trainer - who is surely already aware she is having this

problem since its a bit visible - with the attitude to all the suggestions

on here so far, make me wonder about her bona fides.

Go on Roxanna, prove me wrong.

Hundmutter

BTW - the definition of the exercise in the WTM article you linked is as

vague on the 'search square' as your posts have been, dunno that reading

it will help the US cuz any.  My comments were based on doing Ring

exercises, I have not seen that element performed in Working Trials that

I can remember (though its a long time since I attended one).

Perhaps if you tell us EXACTLY what the dog and handler are expected

to do when asked to find the four articles in the search square, it might

help ?   I was assuming he has to pick up and bring each object, does

he just have to indicate the article where it lies then move on to the next ?

Roxanna

Not sure what you mean by "prove me wrong" Hundmutter. Or why you qustion my Bona Fida"Confused Smile

But just for your curiosity here is a description of what working a dog in search square consists of .

The dog must fine 4 hidden small articles in an area of 25 X25 yards square.

The handler must not enter the search area, but verbal encouragement is allowed.

Each article must be brought back to the handlers hand and not dropped on the way and picked up again or points are lost. A Good "present" to hand in the top stakes is essential, and any barking by the dog or erratic behaviour is penalised.

The dog is then sent in again until it has found all 4 separately . Time allowed is 5 minutes.

Just because I have not commentated on your posts, does not mean I have ignored them. I read all the posts from everyone.

I have been with my trainer for the last 12 years and have had great success with my other (now retired) dog, in competing in working trials. I am not actually competing with my younger dog but do still train all the exercises and do like them to be carried out to competition standard.

I like to sort out my dogs problems by not always relying on my trainer to sort them out and lessons do "cost me" and I live 50 miles from my trainers location, so i ask other people their views on these things, and try and solve things myself. As it`s not imperative that I sort this problem out in any given time, as its more annoying than what it is essential. I am always ready to learn more about dogs and training and after over 50 years of owning German Shepherds I feel I have quite a lot of experience with the breed and its genetic traits. Even so, I still learn new things all the time from observing others training their dogs and asking questions etc.

This section of PDB forums appears very "cliquey" though and probably not suited to me personally. Some people can explain their problems with ease...while others (like me?) can`t. Also without actually seeing a dog and its owner working together, no-one, however experienced they are, can diagnose a problem with any real accuracy over a dog forum. They can only give an answer on how they personally interpret a question.

I stated from my first post that my dog did NOT have problem with tracking. ok?

I`m now regretting I had bothered to post on this section and will probably not do so again, as there are plenty more forums that are a lot more friendly!!!!

Seems every one who answered was trying to be helpful and answering according to the question presented. I didn't see any unfriendly posts but you appeared to get a tad testy when you weren't happy with the answers. I still maintain your dog is leaking drive and needs to learn to cap it.
