Agree with Cutaway 1000 percent.

Cutaway, your comments show that you are well on your way to becoming a training helper.  You're asking the right question and your doing it for the right reasons.

All you need is to keep working on figuring it out, outside help would be beneficial, but I think you'll get there with that attitude!

Nice post and nice job!  I like reading stuff like that :)

Cutaway  basically good - excellent post as far as different decoys go.  As you say there are training decoys, there are trial or maintenance decoys and then I would add, there are decoys who never worked a dog. - These are very important in civil training since they act like a normal ( non dog decoy)  persons would. That is a quality which is hard to get from a experienced decoy .

But my problem with sport clubs for training PP dogs is that they teach the dog to target the equipment. Where the pp dog needs to target the man.

LOL!!!! Not necessarily so but in many way it is truth. Even so I think you are just playing. :)

Prager, don't be too hasty!  lol

Not all of us helpers do.  My dog will bark at the man with the sleeve beside him.  He will come off the sleeve on the ground to start the fight with the man.after the sleeve is slipped.

He is an all Prey dog who has been taught that the man is the issue and he will only be used in sport.  Some of us do know how to teach that.  It's just a matter of training the complete picture.  My daughter's dog is also all prey driven and he will look the helper in the eye when he guards.  He too is taught that way (with different techniques than my dog).

Helpers just need shown how to do it.

Ok thought about it...... sticking with my original post. OP there are sharks in the water and their favourite meal is newb meat.
in commercial dog world everyone got an angle especially the ones on forums that tell you they don't.

I got nothing to sell so being honest is not a problem for me.

bzcz,

My 8.5 year old female, Xena, is the same way. She will bark at the man, she will spit the sleeve and go after the helper if she is agitated off of it. She however, is not all prey... she has alot of defense. I have never done any PP work with her as I only do IPO with Xena. She would have made an awesome PP dog though. She comes out the gate in defense, but will switch to prey and has always had full grips. I have had the helpers teach all my dogs to focus on them and not the equipment. As I do not like equipment oriented dogs, even though I do sport.

As for finding a good helper. I have been in the sport since 2000.. before that I did PP work and some PSA. There are alot of great decoys or helpers. There are also some that should not even own a gold fish. It is a matter of doing your research and going out and watching them work and catch dogs. You will meet some really nice helpful people along the way. There are some very experienced helpers and decoys that I would not let catch any of my dogs... but there are alot more that I would work with any day. I really like the helper that our club has now. He catches dogs safely and has a natural talent for working dogs.

So do your research and find clubs in your area. Go to trials and watch and meet people. You will meet helpers and trainers at trials that will give you some great tips. You will more than likely also meet some that will welcome you out to their club and maybe even take you under their wings so to speak. Yes this world is full of sharks... but luckily most of them are not helpers or decoys...lol.

Have a great day..

Mebbe people should tell about the guy in ohio (not hessler) the other one that experienced people sent their dogs to and the dogs ended up feeding off each other while others were illegally sold on with fake papers unknowns to the owners...... and hessler and ......

you owe to the newbs to tell the full story or does everyone just forget.

I have no idea what you are talking about.  Dogs feeding off of each other???  Maybe those of us who train and do this for fun just don't visit the same levels you seem to find.

I stand by my statement that helpers aren't out to ruin dogs or take advantage of newbies.

Bottom line is if the dogs they work look like crap, no one will bring them dogs to work.

JYL,

I know, I saw your video posted.  NICE girl.  I liked watching her work.  She has a natural edge to her that gives her more power in the work.

Good Helper work and a good dog are always fun to watch.

Are you not part of the broader dog community with ethics. google corey drewberry (will have check the name) dog trainer for 20 years.

cops saw a "trained" dog of a customer and thought dog fighting ring and got a warrant, then got a shock.

now did i say everyone is corrupt, i actually said join a reputable club and said basically there is lots of bad shit out there. what is yr freakin problem.
