How do you teach to hold ?and then: what do you use first dowl , pvc , dumbell , ect...

I use the dowel first. I teach a calm hold on that first and then I teach the dog to carry the dowel. When the dog has that down I then switch it to the dumbell.
I would recommend Ivans tapes called "obedience without Conflict.. The Retreive". This is the method I used and I must say that my current dog has the best retrieve out of all the dogs I have ever trained to retrieve. My male retrieves are fast, happy and he holds the dumbell calm and firm.
