4.5 years is too old for first litter?

by Ibrahim on 02 December 2010 - 08:12

If she is healthy I don't think so, I know breeders who breed their healthy bitches upto 6-7 years old. You can always take your vet's opinion as he/she knows her well enough to tell you.

I mean first time pergnant at 4.5 years is too old?

by crhuerta on 02 December 2010 - 14:12

No...not too old....but just remember that the "older" the female is before her first breeding, the more of a possibility that she has a harder time conceiving.
Make sure she is healthy & fit.....and I would absolutely suggest having progesterone testing done from beginning until time for breeding....(if possible) perhaps 2-3 weeks after, to make sure she "maintained" proper levels to carry pregnancy.
I know that's a lot of "checking" and testing....but sometimes it's necessary.

What breed?  4.5 shouldn't be to old, but the beed does matter.  4.5 is still just a youngster in a breed like the Malinois that can live to be 15+, but it's middle aged in some of the giant breeds that only live to 8 or 9.

I general though it shouldn't be a problem.  I wouldn't wait any longer though.

can you tell us why you want to breed your female for 1st litter at this age and why did you not give her her 1st litter when she was a little younger the shelters are full with unwanted dogs puppys gsd are no exception however good luck with what ever you do just remember your female is the important one in all this

It is a GSD,she won many times,I start to breed her at 3.5 years, I live in small city , so hard to find a suitable male, she fight very very hard when the male approach her.I think this is the last chance to breed her.Is any method to clam her down and accept the stud dog, or just by force?Ant medicine help?

Personaly I have not had a problem physicaly with a female having her first litter at that age. But I have noticed it was rougher on the pups. not always but enough that it's noticable. The mother seemed to not mother the pups as much as they should, almost like the pups were a nuicance(sp). As much as I would rather wait longer sometimes, If I plan to breed a female I do it by the time she is 3, only because it is easier on the pups. Now this has just been my experience. Maybe some kind of hormone change.
