May I ask the average lifespan of your GSD's? The longest lived one? Thanks.

by SGBH on 02 January 2005 - 06:01

One of mine lived 14 years, 9 months. The others passed away around the 14 year mark. Only one passed away prematurely, 6.5 years.

my dad's GSD died at 18. This dog was sired by an english import. I vaguely remember him as a black and silver dog. My own best case was 14, worst 9.

Alex fell asleep at my side and never woke up again at 12 years and 4 months.

My neighbor's shepherd lived to be 16 years of age. My first shepherd Heidi died 1 month shy of of her 12th birthday. She died in her sleep. My second shepherd Dana had to be put to sleep at 12. Degenerative Myeolapathy.(I hope the spelling is correct!) Dawn Bonome

Mine is 12.5 and doing well..doesn't hear as well or move so fast..but in great spirits and still enjoys going for walks(shorter ones though) also daily glucosamine pill helps him get around.

Most "experts" write it is 10-12 and certainly most owners of several GSDs will tell you every day past 12 is a gift. Certainly it is less than 13 years. The GSDCA has something called the 13 club if your dog makes it that long. Considerably less than 5% of all GSDs live to be 13. As for 14 and beyond, your dogs are in the uper 1/2 of the upper 1 percentile.

It varies on the care, feed fed, supplements and breeding lines of the dog to live a rip old age of near fifteen years as many of my customers dogs have. All is in care, genetics and lines of the dog in question. care plays a vital part and feeding properly also.

Nice to see you back in such a positive frame of mind Wildthing. And you obviously only deal in animals of quality. No more problems with that troublesome neighbour?
