Koots: Oh so you can still Register crosses between Varieties of BSD in Canada; you just have to take the 1,2,3,4 coatlengths as guide to the named Breed ? I think ours must have worked like that, once.

Can you tell us about the Show structure ? Was I correct in thinking there is a parallel, less formal, type of Dog Shows available ? And would it be correct to assume that attending the second type of Show does not enable you to qualify a dog in the formal Shows calendar ? Does Canada have a single equivalent of Crufts and Westminster ? TY

Hund - from the CKC exerpt that I posted, see section (b) below. I seem to think that at one time you could not interbreed varieties but obviously that is not the case anymore.

b) Interbreeding of the varieties of Belgian Shepherd Dogs is permissible.

I cannot make any comment about showing in Canada since it has been over 20 yrs since I showed my Terv, and we only went to 1 or 2 events before I decided it wasn't my thing.

Strange isn't it, that the UK and Canada seem to have swapped directions over the BSD issue within fairly recent times.

I guess if it hadn't included Section B, it would not have needed the rest of it.

If I want to learn more about the Canadian system (it's only curiosity about dog matters in general, I'm not planning to emigrate to Canada !) reckon I'll need to look into it further, online etc. Under the British system, the names and a few Rules have altered over time, but we have had two parallel Show systems ( the formal, seriously competitive, one, plus the casual version) operating for well more than 2 decades. IDK how many other countries this is true of.

Koots. Are you familiar w Denise Fenzi's Tervs. She competes regularly in Schutzhund but then again that's one of her goals and she breeds to import lines that carry BOTH T and M lines. Here is an example http://www.spritebelgians.com/breeding/litter-j.shtml

OP Thank you for rescuing the little one. My guess is GSD or mostly gsd tho in the first pictures there was something about the shape of the face that leaves a ?mark. As noted as she matures you'll get a better idea.

Tell your friend don't waste her money on the DNA test - if you look into it it's bad science. They started it based on very limited testing that was not statistically significant.  These are the same folks that say GSDS are related to Mastiffs but not to the continental herding breeds (Belgians, Dutchies). Now maybe they tested a hi-line that someone slipped a mastiff in to get the butt ugly block heads you see on some VA dogs these days but even if so it goes back to statistically significant testing which the did not do - 1,2 or even 5 does not a breed make. I've seen a # of mutts that owners foolishly paid for the test which was so far off the mark in each case it wasn't funny. A money making scam is all it is. A good dog person with a lot of time in grade can give a far better idea of what a mix is based on type color coat and most importantly character temperament and intelligence.

Sine it is likely she's some combination of herding/working breeds make sure your friend is prepared to socialize her, train her and find her a job or sport she loves. Good luck to all of you.

Tig - no I am not familiar with that person or her dogs but will check them out. Thanks for the link - it's good to hear of people working the Tervs.

@TIG: Excellent comments on the DNA testing stuff; that's a great theory on where that 'mastiff' thing came from !
