Harry, usually I would say to you:   In your circumstances, 'Don't get a dog'.
At all, never mind one of a high-energy working breed.  Particularly in London.
(I know London, I was born there and lived the first 2/3 of my life in the city.)
NO dog deserves to spend hours in a crate or alone in a walled in yard ...
and I'd like to hear what your Mum has to say about your plans and their
effect on her life and her child-minding work.

I detect a certain amount of career ambition ... if you want to get into Security
work then yeah you would need your own dog, and one that is capable of work
if you are going to get NASDU certified.  [But I have to say that sort of man+dog
security work is probably on its way out, now. JMO]

But you said that your prime interest was a liking for (I don't say love of, 'cos I don't
get that you have yet educated yourself enough about the breed)  BSD Malinois.
So why not start more gently ?  The majority of Malis available in the UK are still
Showline bred, they are less full-on than the working line Maligators most discussed
on PDB.  Get an older Mali from Breed Rescue, learn to live with the breed first and
foremost - you are 18, you do not have to 'do it all now'.!!!

Doubleaitch if you are set on a working dog, start with a working line GSD, once you know what working line GSD is,  it would be easier to imagine that Mal is a working GSD on steroids...
Also, average life of a dog is 12-14 years, you are 18 i bet within next 2-3 years you will be seriously dating, getting married, believe me you will not have time or attention for a dog like Mal while maintaining a full time gf....women are much more demanding than dogs...

I think the OP is long gone seeing as how they posted in June and haven't replied since. But if anyone is in the same situation and is considering a mal, I'd recommend holding off on it. I was around 18/19 when I decided I wanted a mal but I knew there was no way I could make time for a dog with such needs going into college (I would have been totally overwhelmed if I had gotten one straight out of HS).

After college and working in the real world for a couple years, I finally decided to bite the bullet and get one. My mal is not a working line but she's still got lots of energy and is always looking for something to do. I'll be honest, I haven't gotten her into any legit "sports" YET but I keep her busy with obedience and little games like put your toys away or go find my keys, etc. She's not out of control or nuts - she just wants things to do and be around her 'people'. My mal is a ton of work and I'm constantly training and exercising her but she is one of the best dogs I've ever had, I wouldn't give her up for the world. If you have a sincere love for the breed and have the time, dedication and money for it, I'd say to consider it. But just know that if you get one, it's a commitment that may last you a good 15+ years (if it's a pup of course).

I saw this video and thought you might like to watch it, regarding whether you should own a Malinois or not.  Enjoy.
