Ears too big for full Mal, if you read the breed standard they are supposed to have small, triangular ears

Really? I see GSD?? Could be wrong I suck at this stuff, but that looks like GSD to me.

ETA: Maybe a Mali x GSD??

straight up Mal! not only the physical appearance, but that stare in the second picture- Mals are the only dogs that can actually shoot lasers out of their eyes.

Somebody lost a good dog and you were rewarded for your kindness.  I think what you have is a cross between a pure Mal and  a Mal/GSD -- so a 3/4 Mal, 1/4 GSD.  Crosses from Mal to GSD are not uncommon by some Mal people who want some of the bulk and reflection and sanguinity of the GSD, but back to the Mal because they don't want to lose the core of what they have in the Mal -- drive and athleticism.  His ears and darker sable coloring at six months could be consistent with pure Mal but it is more likely to come from the GSD.  The rest of his look and structure are Mal in domination.  Any up to date pics to share?

Maybe Conspicuous and MVF were looking at LadyFrost's
pix, not the OPs two photos ?

Whatever, if he was 8 months when you first posted, vwitt, I'd
love to see an up-to-date one now, nearly 4 months later.
Bet he has changed a bit, maybe grown into his ears ?

Hundmutter....LOOOOL..did you just insulted 2 posters?..

The point was that size of those ears is very GSD like, if it was not for those satellite ears i would have said no doubt Mal..BUT .Mals do have a lot smaller ears even at puppy stage....and yes we need updated photo....to continue this..LOOOOOL

I think it looks mal/gsdX . being a rescue pup with unknown background  some of these  idiot byb's honestly don't know the difference between a gsd and a mal.....A byb not too far from where I live  is most likely selling 'pb' gsds pups sired by a mal(or malX) they used as their GSD 'stud' ...it came to them" free to good home", they bred it, and dumped it in the shelter never realizing  it wasn't a pb GSD.. This is the dog... I pulled for  rescue at the time and he's been adopted to a great home.

LF,  its not an insult to suggest they may have read it wrong !  LOL
- anyone can get the wrong end of the stick when they skim-read ...
MVF wrote about '6 months' and 'dark sable' both of which apply to
your 2nd photo but not to the OP's.

PS  GSD Standard doesn't want enormous great ears either, but I
bet we all know a purebred Shepherd or 20 that has them.

Ohh, yes!  My husband used to call the girl in my sig 'bat lady' when she was young!

by vwitt on 19 September 2013 - 22:09

Hi everybody! Yes, he's about a year old now. Here are a few recent pics. He currently weighs 58 lbs and has hovered there for the past few months. He LOVES jumping on top of things as you can see. Very light and cat-like on his feet. I have had many people come up to me while hiking and ask if he's a Malinois .... or a coyote .... or a kangaroo ....
