No repercussions because it was a dog-friendly beach and the dog was on leash? I guess there's no legal standing, but it seems a little off that any dog (as long as it's leashed) can go around killing wildlife...

Whatever breed, sorry. Doesn't matter. I know what you were referring@Keith. It still was a topic changer.

It's a baby sea lion.

Seals are the ones that have the more "roly poly" appearance and move on land with movements from their entire body. Sea lions are able to use their front flippers to help them move on land a lot faster. Thus, sea lions have larger flippers than seals.

As someone who has worked at a marine mammal rehab. center (especially with sea lions), I'm surprised they walked away like nothing happened. Don't know what condition the sea lion was in to begin with, but I've seen shark attack victims that have had a quarter of their tail and end of their body removed yet still survive with the proper medical attention. Guess some people just don't have as much respect or care for wildlife.

"There are three types of people in this world: those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who wonder what happened."
- Mary Kay Ash

We need to add a fourth type:  Those that sit idly by, watching and barking orders to those taking action while filming on their IPhone or video camera.

There are really two types of people; those that take action in a crisis and those that talk about it......(.And of course those that talk about it on internet forums as if they had any experience.)

Sorry, but to leave three woman struggling to save that poor Sea Lion from a dog, while video taping and taking no action is disgusting in my opinion.  What is the worst that can happen?  You get bit by a dog, not that big of a deal.  Comparing that to trying to save a downed police Officer during a gunfight with a heavily armed suspect is ridiculous.  First you said a dog bite is no big deal; then you even you said that shooting the K-9 was probably the right approach, now it has suddenly changed? Too hard for me to keep up.  The videographer telling them to "drown the dog" while watching and video taping is ok, though right?  I suppose some people are so traumatized by being bitten by a dog that they can only stand by and watch?  I just don't buy it.

That is my opinion, put down the damn camera and help those brave women.

Don't be insulted if I don't reply back to you, I just have nothing further to say.  Shades Smile

The sea lion might have already been dead and washed ashore... but, personally I think the male filming should have attempted to help the woman...especially considering we are not talking a lap dog here...

Okay beetree, I have the jelly fish ready to go. :)

All jokes aside, I was only pointing out the differences between seals and sea lions to be helpful. That was one of the most common questions we would get asked at the marine mammal rehab center.

by joanro on 27 March 2013 - 20:03

I doubt the little baby sea lion was already dead, since a flow of blood appeared when the dog took a deeper grip on the throat of the sealion pup. If it was already dead, it would not have bled freely like that.
