I use German for my work with my GSD and English when we are just living life. He responds well to both, and I find it interesting that when I speak to him in German he seems totally alert and ready to work. When I speak English to him around the house he behaves as if he could use a plate of bacon and eggs! It is sort of like when you go to your job and have your "work" voice and your "home" voice. He is American born, and bilingual (most of my friends have not mastered a second language) so I consider him a pretty smart fellow :)

We play Rosetta Stone language CD's in various languages. The dogs seem to understand well, some are conversational, but most can't write worth a damn...even in English...must be the lack of opposable thumbs to hold the pen properly. I've considered teaching them to type, but I just don't have the patience. :)
The dogs are just responding to whatever sound and tone you have conditioned them to. Many people use the Dutch, French, German, etc. out of tradition of their breed's origin. Many people use made up languages, combinations of languages, etc.

I use German for my Malinois. I lived in Germany for awhile and picked this language for my boy. He does just fine with it.
