I have never heard anyone discuss heart worms in Southern Cal.

Is the risk really very low here in SoCal?

In areas of little mesqitos, there is no heart worm concern?

Very dry in my area.

No fleas either.

Same as me, and my vet told me he's never seen a case - and like an idiot I never researched it further.

Heartworm is here, indeed. I learned the hard way. A smaller percentage of positives, but that's no consolation to the owners of a dog who died as a result. Even with adult heartworms, in some cases, they do not show up as positive on the ELISA snap tests that most vets use. And, most vets here never test for it anyway. :(

Now I just treat my dogs preventively, better safe than sorry. Ivermectin is really, really cheap.

This is info/map in my area, I don't know if there is anything for the high desert areas... http://www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/vet/heartworm.htm

Mostly high risk in Florida and Texas.
