I am confused - is it true that AKC will only register if the pups are bred/whelped (1 or the other) in the US? I've never heard this. My only recollection is that both parents must be AKC registered. That's it. Was I wrong or has it changed? I thought perhaps we were discussing the "American-Bred" class in AKC shows, where INDEED the dog must be whelped in the US (NO other requirements).

My understanding from AKC is that a pup born outside of the United States must be registered first with the breed registry where it is born and then registered as a "Foreign Dog" with USA. Here are a few more questions for feedback: 1) If I buy a female from Italy and she is 35 days pregnant (bred in Italy to an Italian Stud). When the pups are born in the United States what registry is primary? What steps are required to register the litter? Who is noted on the AKC certificate as the breeder? 2) I own an AKC female (born in the United States and registered with AKC along with all her siblings as a litter). I now send this female to Austria to be bred and then she is returned to me to have the puppies. When the pups are born, are they eligible for AKC litter registration? What steps need to be taken to register the litter? 3) If you buy a male let's say from Europe and bring him to the United States. Then breed him to a female that you already own that your brought from Argentina. When the puppies arrive, born in the United States, what registry is primary? What documentation is needed to register the litter? These are actual scenerios that have occurred. Does anyone have the answers?

In the 3 cases Kathy describes - all three litters are to be registered with AKC as primary. The imported adults must be registered with AKC just like an imported puppy. They must be transferred to American owners name in country of origin. 1. Proper import docs and breeding docs are needed, for the litter imported in utero, this includes copy of sires actual registration papers and breeder's certificates of both registries I believe!! The breeder is the person whose name is on the females papers at time of stud service so make sure that this was done in Europe! So, if you buy the female PRIOR to breeding, have her transferred to your name in country of origin - and if after, make sure you get the transfer of female in whelp signed just to cover all bases so you CAN be considered the breeder. Otherwise you will be sending paperwork overseas for signatures and it will take forever to get it all done correctly. 2. AKC - same as above without having to re-register female with AKC. Get both AKC and foreign stud service certificates, copy of males papers. If he has sired other imported litters - make sure he has DNA on file with AKC. Otherwise, get kit, send to stud owner - also applicable on #1. 3. Register both dogs normally as imports with AKC. Pups conceived here and born here are AKC just like any other litter. Just make sure all your dates are correct. Even if not processed, dates of transfer should be before breeding dates. And yes - there are people who circumvent the rules to their own convenience !!!! I know of one overseas breeder with a young, untitled, unrated female who got accidently bred. An American friend registered the female here, the litter here and papered all the pups here - mother and pups never left Germany...all those pups are in Europe, with AKC papers.
