"Why don't you personally GO to the kennel, meet the people, see the dogs, and ASK for references. Keep in mind that even if someone says a dog is "high quality" because it is out of "Outstanding VA lines" you would be a fool to pay more than $1500 for a pup." Jenni, thats a great idea, but asking others for their opinions is smart..I went to a couple of kennels and the people were Great! Very informative ..the dogs the w=shwoed me looked great..etc..turns out they had a lot of complaints against them...if I hadn't have asked others I would have jumped right in and boutgh a pup and probably ended up very unhappy! So mysti nothing wrong with asking ??'s Good luck finding a pup... ps I have heard only good things about Mittlewest..

Ah ...gotta love those 'working dog' ZEALOTS!!! Sport Dog, Well said!

Let me clarify - MOST Show-line dogs are bred only to be pretty. I even heard a guy say that they were bred strictly to look like the West German Flag! Most of them have No hardness, and if you watch the Sieger Show clips it shows a good lot of them coming right off - so, if I said I got a good dog, I did, but only because the Working Lines is in there. As as for the "Working Dog Zealot" comment - that seems a bit ignorant to have been said. If anything - that is the big division between Workingline folks and showline folks right there - that showline folks beleive a lot about their dogs that simply isn't true. Tell me, when was the last time a showline went to the WUSV? Maybe a dog with a good mix in it, but not a straight showline. I have a showline male that I bought for personal protection about a year ago. I did not know what I was doing, so I thought I was getting a really good dog for my $ worth. When I had a really good trainer come out & do lots of real life scenarios, it turns out he was nothing at all what he was sold to me as! That dog would not only Never protect me in a real life situation, he had no hardness and would come right off the sleeve when even the littlest pressure was applied. So, I know what I am talking about here, and it really sucks to find out, but it taught me a lot. So - you people can believe what you want about your dogs - I seen enough whole litters being sent to the states because the German Siegers throw long-hairs, and nobody wants anybody to find out!

Sport dog - Sweetpea did not say "Banning" she said they should just quit breeding them. That really is too bad about your showline male not being anything you bought it for, Sweetpea. I got ripped off too, before I finally figured out that most showline dogs are a joke. I like my working line dogs - they are not high strung like the showline people try to say they are, mine are quiet in the house, social, but very good defense if & when its needed. Gerry

sweetpea, I can understand your frustration with the showlines and breeders, However theirs some showlines who DO work and work very good. You're not looking at the right places. A very nice Showline that I truly respect is Boy vom Tönsbrock. He works GREAT! If you don't believe me go to Vaboy.com and look for yourself. I was so impressed for the way he performed at the 2005 Ulm sieger show. Hes a great dog. I'm sorry about your experience with your personal protection dog. I knew someone who was ripped off by theses personal protection dog sellers too. Hopefully more people will understand that theses personal protection dogs are no more than dogs who cant make it into schutzhund for some obvious reason so the sellers uses some kind of unrecognized title to push more money on uneducated buyers. Note theses dogs were probably sold to the seller for the price $1,000 to $2,000.

Sweet Pea, can you explain to me why German 'showlines' are bred to be like the West German flag? BTW FYI, there is no such thing as the West German flag, it is the German flag? The German flag contains three (3) horizontal, even sized stripes, black, red and gold (not yellow!) from top to bottom. How does that compare to the dog? Also, you write that you did not know any better a year ago and bought a showline male who would not protect you and barely holds on to the sleeve? Now a year later, you are such an expert now, that you give the advice that breeders should stop breeding these showline dogs!!! My, my, my! What a busy year you had to turn into such a super woman.Where is the thumbs up smilie, when you need it? This thread was about Mittelwest Kennels. They have great dogs, some with super working ability (wasn't it a MW dog who won the title of Universal Sieger? Correct me if I am wrong), some have less working drive, just like dogs from other kennels and bloodlines. I have seen whole litters of working and conformation lines pee all over themselves and hide when we came to tattoo them. Heads up to kennels like Mittelwest, Wilhendorf etc, who have the resources and patience to breed great dogs and also represent us internationally. There will always be envious people who have to badmouth that, most of the time anonymously of course. Chris A showlines breeder, who can't be convinced to stop breeding these lines

I have only heard good things about the kennel. The owner is very highly spoken about. I have a Half DDR / Half West showline dog that is a trained PPD. He has his PDC in PSA and is now also being trained in ScH. This dog is tough as nails and is for REAL. Also it takes a lot stronger dog to fight a man for real (PPD work) than a dog that knows he is playing a game when he steps on the field (ScH). So to talk down a dog that is trained for PPD is just silly.

What happened to the thread where this was being discussed? Chris
