GSDfan

came home to just half the handle, spoon part was a little bigger than a silver dollar. I'm pretty sure I know what to look for, but if anyone can give me the run down for an obstructed bowel i'd appreciate it just to make sure. How long will it take to pass? I'm worried.

If it was gnawed into pieces before being swallowed, chances are that it will take one-two days for all of it to move through. You can up the odds of it going through the GI tract w/o doing any damage if you feed the dog wadded up pieces of bread that you've wet down with milk or another tasty liquid...size of dog dictates how much to feed. If you don't have bread in the house plain cotton balls, also wet down with milk or other tasty liquid, can also be used.

If the spoon was chewed into small pieces (usually is)and this is an adult dog, then there probably are no serious concerns. I may add another solution to help pass the splinters quicker, and that is some cheap canned food such as Alpo. The dogs love it, but it tends to make their stool very loose. I have successfully used it to help a dog pass something that it should not have eaten. A GSD's digestive tract is fairly short, and typical of a medium to large dog. They will pass what they eat usually within twenty-four (24) hours or less. It has happened to me, when one raised itself to the kitchen sink and removed a wooden spoon. I guess the spoon tastes and smells like the last thing that it stirred, hence the attraction. Good Luck, Bob-O

maybe your dog needed some fiber? just kidding.. Had a femle GSD jump up on a trampoline, eat a beach towel (90%) of it. Took her to a vet, told to watch her closely, she threw up and passed towel for 2 days, then went into distress, I rushed her back to the vet who did surgery, had to go into her intestines in 7 places to remove the towel which had snaked its way through her stomach and got stuck. Cost me $1000.00 But by the next day she was 100 miles an hour and was fine.

Metamucil added to the food will encase a foreign object and help it pass assuming it is not too large. I just heard about a GSD who became lethargic, the owner took him to a vet and he removed various pieces of numerous dog toys. He is expected to make a full recovery. Some GSD's will eat just about anything (but their dog food LOL). The thing that is almost certain to cause an impaction is when a dog eats part of one of those momo-filament rugs. They are the kind that unravel. They can be killers. Don't ever use them as bedding.

LOL, I meant mono-filament rug.

I have a male that I think is part beaver. He will gnaw a tree down at the base till it comes crashing down, then proceed to drag it around. Can't even have a dog house in his play area as he will drag them around and chew on them. Never had a problem but does make for intersting looking poo. LOL.

Part of what I call "treasure hunting" around the yard. I see a pile with certain details and solve the mystery of "Who ate that?" Bob-O
