do you mean to tell me, that people like this below, offering puppies for sale by December 15th in time for Christmas out of backyard champion bloodlines like General Arno are just in it for money and don't care about the breed? hahahahah

I know it's blasphemy, but it's true.

Not ALL pups ready by Christmas will end up in the shelter, although I understand what you are talking about.
I have a litter (that won't be ready by Christmas, but shortly thereafter) that was planned out for a long time. 3 pups were reserved before the breeding took place.
I have no reason to believe they would end up in a shelter, due solely to them being ready around Christmas-time.
Just a thought....

The day after Thanskgiving 2001 I lost my best friend, my first GSD, Dylan. The best Christmas gift I could have received that year was another GSD. As it turned out I wasn't able to find one in time for my Christams gift, but Blitz was whelped on Christmas Day.
The stigma placed acrossed the board on breeders who have puppies available at Christmas is really not fair. Each buyer is an individual and needs to be treated as such. My husband and I would have loved a Christmas puppy very much and it would have had a forever home with us. On the other hand, I do not think it's appropriate to sell a gift puppy to a family with young kids or a rowdy family environment. In fact I never sold a puppy to anyone, anytime, with kids under 3 years of age and then I expected them to have some dog experience. If the kids, no matter what their ages, acted like a pack of wild dogs, they didn't get the puppy period.
Don't label every breeder with puppies available at Christmas as unethical before you know all the details. Maybe they don't screen their buyers and maybe the puppies will end up in rescue, but maybe they will end up in a loving family. I'd have given anything to get a GSD as my Christmas gift in 2001. I'd love one this year truth be told.

I had puppies available around that time, but kept them until the beginning of January to avoid undue stress for them. I agree with Blitzen 100%: Do not label every breeder like this. I have two long-planned and very well thought of litters on the ground right now, but they have nothing to do with Christmas season. Unfortunately, we can't time ovulation in females.

I think it is unfair to stereo breeders who happen to have pups around Christmas time.
But I would certainly disagree to breeders advertising their pups as christmas gifts, directly or indirectly.

I think it is unfair to judge those who happen to have a Christmas litter. After they do not decide when the bitch comes into season! If the breeder does sales properly, with a questionaire and interviews, I think all should go just fine. The only draw back is that most people go somewhere over the holidays, but if done properly the pups will just get tons of socialization.

Vomfelsenhof, what percentage of Christmas pups would you say end up in a pound or rescue? It's very high.
Guys and Girls, where did I say ALL breeders were irresponsible? They know who they are, but won't change anyway. Why would you need a "warm and fuzzy" holiday to sell a pup. Wouldn't a responsible breeder do like Laris said? It would keep them out of a very stressful situation and weed out the sappy moron who doesn't really need a dog anyway?
