Sorry, hit enter to soon.
I have a 20 month old female that was in heat in March, came in again in July and just started again yesterday. Is it common for females to come into heat every 4 months instead of every 6 months. I do keep her and my male both in the house, maybe this is why. I had her urine checked the last time because of the way she was acting only to find that she was coming into her cycle. Should I be alarmed. Everything seems 100% normal with her.
Thanks

Immyjay, I would not say that it is common, but I am sure that for a few females it might be the norm. Most of mine cycle every five (5) months, give or take a couple of weeks, and I have one (1) who has an erratic cycle of every eight (8) to ten (10) months.
Now get this-my oldest bitch had a cycle in late August. She is one for who you can plan by the calendar to cycle every twenty-two (22) weeks. Two weeks ago a younger female started her cycle, followed immediately by a female who is but a few months older, followed by the one who has the erratic cycle with a long time span between. Suddenly "old reliable" jumped the gun and started her cycle again, less than three (3) months after her last one prior. I attempted one (1) final breeding during this cycle due to the need to retire her, but she did not "take" even after successive breedings with a male known to be fertile. And this bitch has produced very well in the past.
This concerns me a bit due to her age. So, in approximately two (2) months I will have her spayed for her own good. You always hear the farmer's logic about the dominant bitch theory, but it never worked for me.
So, what you have is normal per my knowledge, but I agree that it appears to be quick.

I have a 4-year old bitch that cycles every 4 months. I have tried breeding her 3 times by natural methods and artifical insemination without success. Some breeding experts I have read think that a bitch that short-cycles does not have time to produce fully mature eggs and will be difficult to breed.

Hey Bob-O thanks, I'm really not to concerned because she is vet checked so often if anything goes wrong and I did just talk to them yesterday about this and they didn't seem to be to concerned. I'm sitting here sort of smiling about your situation. That would be quit a happening at your place. Weird things do happen. Just wondered if this happens very much with others. One thing, she is being very consistant, almost to the exact day of the month when she comes in. lol

I have a female that goes into heat every 4 1/2 months. She has had 2 litters no problem. Have some that go in every 6 and one that does evry 8 months. All where bred no problem. Nice litters. Did have one that had very eratic cycles and only on every other was she fertile. Learned the every other one as I wanted spring pups instead of winter skipped the winter heat got nothing in the spring but got a litter in the winter, so tried a back to back and learned it was every other heat. As she got older they became real eraticback to back a month apart then nothing for 9 months then another back to back, had her fixed.
But every 4 months, if she sucessfully breeds would just mean that is her cycle if it is regular.

I have a bitch that cycles every 4 months instead of 6, Most are every 6 but she is 4. She is an easy breeder, with nice size litters every time No problems.
I agree that so long as it seems to be her "regular" cycle there really should be no problem.

I also have a female who cycles every 4 months, sometimes a little less than 4 months. She has had litters two out of four times she was bred.

My females usually cycle every 6 months, however, have one that came in 3 months after her previous heat (which I had skipped), and I missed this last one, due to not expecting it.
It is not unusual for females to cycle every 4 months. Just as in humans, often, menstruation is different in each individual. What one would say was early, another would think was late.
I do know that having multiple females around eachother all the time will often cause them to be on the same heat-cycle.
Nothing to worry about, just keep an eye on it. :)
