We should start a new campaign, Ban idiot owners not the breed of dogs. You could ban this breed and that breed and the idiot owners will just find another breed to ruin. Idiot people should be banned from owning dogs, I do not beleive in breed specific bans, I do not beleive they work as the idiot owners just find new breeds to exploit with they're stupidity and ignorance. Legislation should take a long hard look at doing this right, Banning breeds won't work !! Banning idiots just might.

Echo Great ideal! Wish we could find a way to actually do this? I would add more to this but you said it perfectly!

Sadly, legislature and city councils do not seem to realize that their laws only hurt the LAW ABIDING citizens, and have absolutely no effect on those who don't give a crap to begin with. We have laws against murder, but that still happens. We have laws against burglary, theft, rape, arson, etc, and those things happen everywhere on a daily basis. More legislation banning idiots would only work if it were enforceable. The best way to do that, as breeders, is NOT TO SELL TO THE IDIOTS IN THE FIRST PLACE. ;) A good thought, however.

You know, they don't exactly wear signs "I'm an Idiot, don't sell me a dog". Many have spent a lifetime hiding their status! :-)~

We know people involved in other breeds that say the same thing. Doesn't help. We have cities in the state that cannot make use of some of the Washington State Patrol's drug and bomb dogs, some of the dogs happen to be breeds banned in certain cities.

Banning the breed is the path of least resistance for the legislature. It far easier to round up a bunch of dogs based on their phenotype and kill them than it is to force irresponsible dog owners to abide by the law. Can't violate their constitutional rights after all. Many dog people are banding together to fight BSL. Join up with one of those organizations so you voice is heard. Don't wait til the GSD makes the list to protest. Until we elect officals who actually like dogs and understand how utterly stupid BSL is, think we will continue to see breed bans in the US.

Blitzin-- I agree with you 100% about electing officials who like dogs, (and, who actually OWN them). I thought about this years ago when I ran into the deputy mayor of my town while on a walk with one of my dogs. I was with my 5 yr old, completely dependable boy--thank God, because the dep mayor had a toddler with him. The child grabbed onto my dog, and unmercifully tugged and prodded him. He took all the abuse, but kept looking at me, pleading with his eyes to move on. The deputy mayor said his little girl seemed to like dogs, and maybe he'll get her one. Well, I ran into him a couple of months back (while walking another one of my dogs). He was escorting his daughter into town, to take her ballet lesson. She was completely dressed in costume and tights. I realized she was now about 8 or 9--and there she was again grabbing onto another one of my dogs, hugging him. She looked at her father (who is still deputy mayor) and asked for a dog. He said, maybe sometime in the future. But I'm wise to him now. He's initiated and backed laws in my village that are not pro dog---I've had to fight a couple, and won---but, had to get down and dirty to do so. Bottom line for me---Who we put in office is going to make all the difference. I think many others probably have the same opinion as me, because I saw on some website a poll being taken--One of the questions asked was "When voting, do you consider animal issues?"

I agree with you on banning idiot owners. My daughter worked at a Vet office and told me about some people who would get tired of their dogs bring them into be euthanized then show up again 2 weeks later with a new puppy. Over the years of working there she would see this happen again and again. Lukily I had the inside scoop and refused to sell them a dog.

Edd, it happens all the time. One of the vets I worked for refused to euthanisize dogs sometimes. He would have the local human society rehome them. Most wanting to just "get rid" of their dog didn't mind at all and they happily handed over the dog. I would sure vote for a bill that would ban morons from owning dogs, but I don't the ACLU would approve. You know it much moe important to be politically correct in the US that it is to protect the lowely animals.

Well it was a nice thought even if not realistic. Best thing to do to screen your buyers the best you can but even then you never know.
