When buying pups, should both the hips and elbows be x-rayed or is one or the other preferred?

by gsdlvr2 on 31 October 2006 - 22:10

What age of pup?

Exactly Gsdlvr2 what is the age of the puppy. The O.F.A. states that they can make a decent determination for hips as early as four (4) months, and elbows a few months later. Both hips and elbows are equally important nowadays. Please note that even though preliminary x-rays can be done at an early age, the older the puppy is at the time of examination then the determination of the final hip/elbow is more accuate. Please examine the document at this link: http://www.offa.org/enewssept2006.pdf It will give you an idea as to how accurate the prelimary x-rays may be. Bob-O

Guys I have another x-ray question. How do you know the x-rays you are sent from breeder are for the dog you are inquiring about? On the slide I think it would help if they put the dogs name and tattoo #.

In order for an xray to be submitted to OFA for a rating, there is a requirement for a lot of information on the dog, the clinic where the xrays were taken, date etc. Sometimes when I have imported a dog, I have received xrays where such information was not there, but these were prelims for young dogs. In order to submit to the SV, similar and thorough information must be on the xray.

Hodie this is a pre-lim on a dog under a year old. I know they have another dog close in age and I was hoping there would be a way, to know it was the right dogs x-rays. I'm normaly a trusting person but I have learned that isn't always good . I'm just trying to do the best I can, to get all the correct info. I do trust this breeder though, just have people on my who are doubting. Concidering all I went through with the last import, I'm trying to cover all the bases and ask all the ipotant questions, leaving nothing to chance.

When the German vet submits the x-ray to the SV, it includes the: Date the x-ray was taken, Date of birth of the dog, name of the dog, registration number of the dog and the dog's tattoo number. It is all neatly inputed on the top of the x-ray being submitted. Stephen

4pack, past something called trust, you should expect the examining veterinarian to place his/her clinic's name, the dog's tattoo (especially for S.V.) or mircochip number, the registration number, date, etc. on the negative before it is developed. The veterinarian has small type characters he/she can arrange below the plate so they will show on the x-ray negative. There is a description of exactly the information required at the O.F.A.'s website. The S.V. is similar, save for the fact that the tattoo number MUST be present on the film. To my knowledge they are not yet accepting a microchip as will the O.F.A.. You are wise to be carful, should request a typed and signed statement from the examining veterinarian that includes all of the identifying characteristics of the dog, and printed on the clinic's letterhead. By the way, I always do this when I send an x-ray to either the O.F.A. or S.V. just in case my handwriting or that of the veterinarian is difficult to read. Good luck, Bob-O

Thanks guys, I thought that was the case. However this is a BE breeding with FCI reg. I have seen many x-rays with no info on them, so I wanted to see what was the norm. Very good idea Bob to request the letter from the vet, on their clinic's letterhead. Thank you and thank you again, Michelle
