Importing Puppies from Czech Republic to USA - Page 1

Hi everyone. Sorry if this has been covered recently; I searched the forums for recent articles and didn't find anything.

I'm looking into importing puppies from Czech Republic to the USA (first time for me), and wondering if I need a customs broker in the USA to help receive the pups. I hope I can do it on my own. I'm working with a breeder in Czech to arrange the shipping from that side.

From what I've discovered so far, it looks like I need to check regulations for:
1. CDC
2. USDA
3. Local state (Texas in this case; coming to DFW)
4. Airline

For the CDC and USDA, since the Czech Republic is not high risk for rabies and is free of Screwworm and Foot and Mouth Disease, and since these puppies are not for commercial resale or adoption, I don't see any requirements other than to "provide a written or verbal statement your dog has only been in a country NOT at high risk for at least 6 months or since birth if under 6 months of age" (from CDC website).

Has anyone imported a puppy recently who can help me understand the process and confirm or correct what I've written above?

I have imported 2 dogs from The Netherlands, and I had to get a customs broker to accomplish this since COVID hit. I used Unity Customs Broker out of Inglewood California. One of my dogs was brought into Houston International and the other was brought into San Francisco International. I did not have to do anything on my end except hire the customs broker. Everything was handled by the Shipper Animals to Fly. I did not have to give a written or verbal statement to anyone. The customs Broker does the paperwork and emails you the paper you need to pick up the puppies. Arrive at airport pick up point, which is not at the actual airport, show papers and ID, pay fee and pick up puppies when they are off loaded from the plane. The pickup point will be a warehouse located near the airport for whichever cargo company is flying the puppies in. My dogs were imported April 8,2021 in houston and June 14, 2022 in San Francisco. Importing a pup from there in the next few weeks, via R-Cargo, any feedback on that shipping comp?

If imported to DFW and you live in the area you won't need a Broker there is a customs offie in Terminal E. You go to the cargo area of whatever airline shipped the pups pick up he passport and shipping docs go to the customs office in terminal. they will clear the pup take it back to the cargo area pay the $100 fee and pick up your dog.

If going to Houston you will need a broker

I’ve been importing dogs and pups into JFK for several years. The last time I went to clear customs, I was asked for MY passport, seriously! Fortunately, I had my fema photo ID with me. I did not fly into the US, I’m a resident of NJ. Go figure

K9SAR: Why in the world would they be asking for your Passport...Unless you flew in with the dog...otherwise it's the dog that flew in...BUT...U.S. Customs can ask for anything they want...I have brought dogs into many different airports and gone thru U.S. Customs at each...They each seem to do their own thing and have no rhyme & reason to what they ask for...
I think what they look at is IF you will make money on your dogs then they require a broker to clear your dog...

DUKE1965: Whenever buying dogs from overseas the Sellers that I've dealt with have always handled all the paperwork needed...EXCEPT...The U.S.Customs Clearance...Maybe you can tell me...Can you take care of the U.S. Customs Clearance from your end?

Qman, duke is shipping me a dog, hopefully Thursday. I'm driving 4 hours one way to get her.

I have brought dogs over with broker and without.. I prefer to pay a little money to a broker and know I have no issues.

the problem I have is, the broker I recommend many years ago on PDB, and no none here ever use or heard of, is now so busy, she doesn't even return my calls.

life is kinda funny like that. but the world turns. and I'm gonna get my dog with or without her. But if it's without, I tell the world, or at least PDB. Because we don't always live in Covid world and if she doesn't help me, I post many years ago and I post today.

People so dumb they think nothing ever changes. I live a long time. Life always changes.

ps Qman, duke lets me have one of his personal dogs. listed on his web site. not one he finds for me.

I think she and I and my son do well with her. We will see.
