I’d like to hear ideas in what conditioning methods are used for a working dog (IGP).

Bite work, of course, followed by biking for short distances, while increasing as the dog becomes better, with a sleeve buried in the dog's mouth. When you can do 30-45 minutes of biking like that, follow it by a few minutes of HARD barking...the dog MUST learn to breath through its nose because its mouth will be full during a bite.
Swimming is great, if you have a place to do it and so is retrieving the toy. Depending on the temps, be careful you dont over do it.

Fitness/conditioning/wellness is beneficial for all dogs, not just "working" dogs. Surprisingly I’ve seen more than a couple LE K9s and MWDs over the years which looked flabby, unhealthy, obese even. And some of the fittest canine athletes I’ve seen are mixed breed rescues with athletic, outdoorsy owners.

I try to break down the elemental movements to run, swim, jump, bite and pull. The variations and combinations, techniques and equipment used to facilitate those movements are virtually limitless…just depends on the ability of the dog in front of you, and your creativity, resources. I’m currently tinkering with a high resistance carpet treadmill for burst strength and anaerobic conditioning. I’ve also run, hiked, walked thousands of miles over the years with a dog alongside.

You can learn a lot about conditioning from the pit bull people. I’ve shown in ADBA conformation shows where amazingly fit and ripped dogs are the norm.

If interested I’m on instagram @ k9_beowulf with my dogs getting different types of land/water workouts for some ideas.
