How to train my puppy not to eat her poop?

Hi everyone, I'm Gustavo Woltmann and I enjoy working in our publishers office since 2006. I have a question regarding my puppy who eats her poop. How can I train her to stop doing it? Is there a meds or any type of food to prevent that?

Put pumpkin in her food. Pumpkin tastes good going down, but not so good in poo. She'll stop eating it almost immediately.

How old is your "puppy", did it do this always, or did it start with it at some point, does it "only" try to eat its own poop, and where does it find the poop?

There are different scenarios: Some dogs

1 simply learn this behavoir from older dogs ( most often from the dam of a litter )
2 lack nutrition
3 start to eat not digested food again (most often worm problems)
4 do have pancreas problems
5 simply try to clean their immediate surrounding

For

1 forbid this behavior strictly
2 change food ( raw is always fine )
3 treat against worms
4 vet check
5 clean up immediately, better, walk your dog on a regular basis ( 3 or 4 times/day ) outside of your property

Susie, are you advising the OP to preferably let the dog eliminate in public places?

One of the most valid reasons why dog-haters so hate us dog people.

Swarn - around here, dog people carry plastic bags to pick up after their pets, and it is a [by-]law to do so in most cities.

I concur with picking up immediately in the yard /kennel if you can, so the feces is not 'tempting' the pup by being available.

Koots, that's my point actually. If you HAVE TO pick up immediately after your dog OUTSIDE, why not also pick up IMMEDIATELY inside your own property, then?

Much easier. And the dog also doesn't get the chance to go for it.

Advising the OP to deliberately make the dog poop outside was baffling!

Like Koots already mentioned on "public places" we do use plastic bags...

I suggested to walk the dog, because it´s good for the dog.

None of my ( adult healthy) dogs ever pooped on my property or in their kennel.
Why?
Normally dogs are clean animals - given a chance ( regular walking outside ) they don´t poop "at home".

I always heard it was feeding pineapple with the food that discourages this bad habit. Pumpkin is usually recommended to firm up stools.

Feed animal protein and fats preferably raw ... nothing left to eat after one pass through. Low quality food is poorly digested and thus may need two trips to digest. If Flys won't eat the poop or lay eggs in it then neither will dogs. I feed human grade animal protein and fats .. flies never touch it.
