Has anyone seen this before? Mojo has started to lick Beau's ears, a bit obsessively. Also, he acts likes he's grooming him, too, at times; we pulled off a tick, and he does that teeth grabbing thing where it was, that seems to have started this.
Now, I was under the impression that the licking is a submissive behavior. But then Mojo will also dominate Beau in play, and will often attempt to hump him. And of course that is a dominant behavior.
So, he's passive-aggressive? Conflicted? What is it?
I have been commanding him to stop the licking, every time I see it, now.

Put some witch hazel on Beau's ears. He'll end up with a fungus or some other crap with all the licking. Sounds like Mojo wants to be a momma, or else he wants to make Beau a mamma, LOl.

Maybe Beau just tastes good?
Seriously, it could be Mojo is trying to tell you something is wrong with Beau's ears. Check them carefully, using a flashlinght so you can see deep down inside them.
The only time I see my dogs licking each other is if one of them has a problem.

My older female is a "Groomer", lol. She grooms everybody that lets her, but mostly her daughter (almost 3) and another younger female (21 month). Mostly faces - ears, and eyes . They seem to enjoy it and it never caused a problem. Neither of the two that are getting licked by her ever needed their ears cleaned by me

Joanro,
I think I will try that witch hazel. I was becoming a bit worried about "excessive" moisture with those floppy ears!
Sunsilver,
His ears are very clean. Beau does not scratch at them at all. Or appear bothered in any way. I am pretty sure it all started with a tick removal, that prompted Mojo's interest in "grooming" or being a "mamma" as Joanro calls it! LOL
Spruell,
Beau certainly is not appearing to mind the attention. Just that Mojo doesn't seem to know when to quit all the time! And, I don't think I can blame this behavior on "leaking drive", this time.
Thanks for all your comments.

hmm...my younger ones would do that to Dozer (and he is no alpha, biggest push over) if he is laying on a pillow they will come and both start licking him in the face, he would dodge for a while and eventually leave (if i do catch it i tell them to knock it off)....so who knows maybe Mojo just wants the spot Beau is in...

My two GSDs will groom each other. Usually face, mouth, ears. It seems to calm them down after excitement and they do it in the evening as well. Isis is grooming Ronin, who is older, more often as he slows down. If I am stretched out on the floor, they wander over and try to groom me, especially Isis. They try to groom my son as well when he is on the floor.

I thought that grooming was a bonding thing between pack members, totally separate from humping for dominance (or fun).
Now I've known dogs that did lick & worry areas on people & other critters that had something wrong in that area.
Just sayin'!

Jackie, my Ronin (the freak of nature that he is) has found infections and cancer on people. My surgeon friend relied on him more than blood tests for finding miniscule infections prior to surgery (explain why a dog is sniffing your shoulder or knee prior to surgery). He knew when a young girl was going to have a gran mal seizure 15 minutes prior to her seizure, neighbor was 2 hours into the beginning stages of his full cardiac arrest. He can predict storms within 10 minutes 4 hours out, migraines (son and I), blood sugar fluctuations (hubby is diabetic). He always licks the afflicted area and if one of us is feeling bad, he will sing and croon softly with his head close to yours, it sounds sort of like soft whale sounds. My lovable and irreplaceable freak of nature. If I can get a video or recording, I will post it. He really has a beautiful song.

Are his ears infected or yeasty? My cat will lick at the dogs ears (she always did it to Jewel in particular) if they get infected.
