I am watching the news now about these tornadoes that just ravished Oklahoma. It is heartbreaking as they say they are switching from "rescue to recovery" at the collapsed school, for the children.
Is anyone on the board from that area? I pray for all involved.
Is anyone that has search and rescue trained dogs, volunteering their time and dogs?
I was thinking with "all" the disasters of recent times, wouldn't it be nice if the requirements now for a sch, IPO title would be for "actual" search and rescue, instead of just tracking!
It seems you can barely turn around anymore without hearing of a "disaster" of 'some' sort.
Quite often where I live you hear of alzheimers patients that have wandered off, or a kid lost in the woods.
I think it would be great if we could ALL, not only demonstrate our dogs were "breed worthy", but actually prove it!
I give a great big "Thank You", to everyone , and their dogs, that are involved in this rescue process.
And unfortunately, there will be more to follow...

That would require a complete mindset change for the SAR community to take advantage of that skill. As far as I know, they won't accept dogs for training if they have IPO/SCH titles.  I've never understood that. I suspect many good trackers could do SAR if they had the chance.

I know Blitzen, I'm just sayin;
Wouldn't it be fantastic though "IF" all that training that goes into some dogs could actually be utilized when truly needed!
I see all the time where people question if their dogs would really, actually bite someone IF the need was there.
I "know" most of my dogs would gladly give a bite, (especially the yorkies).
I also know that if my mother, or grand kids were lost in the woods, my dogs can and will find them.
These are "games" we play all the time.
I also know that some will say, "yeah, whatever" to that.

Kitkat
If you ever come visit me you need to leave those dangerous baby killer "Yorkies" at home LOL

I came through OK city and Tulsa last night and all was clear. But they have a bad mess, and a big loss of life. It is heart breaking.

I've heard of some kennels and veterinarians opening their doors to anyone that can make it to Texas, but its such a long distance.

Maybe we can create a list of such places closer to ground 0 and then spread the info to those in need.

Does anyone on this board have space, or know of businesses to contact, that can take in a couple extra dogs (or cats) for a while?

I'm sure my friend Elizabeth Kreithler will be call, she has urban disaster SAR dog for FEMA, she just competed in Sch 3 nationals a couple weeks ago so I know her dog is still active.

That's what I like to hear Gustav...I think Parrish is heading there to help search too with his sch. Search and resue dog also.
It's just nice to know dogs "can" do both.

Wow, that is one lucky little schnauzer! He/she is moving rather stiffly, but it looks like it's going to be all right, except for some bumps and bruises!

by SitasMom on 21 May 2013 - 13:05

Parrish has he team assembled and ready!

Last year (or year before?), his team worked night and day when the storms hit MO. Searching, then recovering, then clearing fallen houses, with food and water distribution too. He and his team helped in every way possible.
