I am from Canada and have been watching in complete awe of the K9 units searching for bombs in that Boston suburb. I am so proud of the breed and the handlers, and I hope that small town that wanted to ban german shepherds is watching as well. Put those videos in your pipes and smoke it, and the next time they bring up the banning of german shepherds I hope the whole world tells them where to go......  Sorry for the rant......

I saw some nice looking sable GSD's on the news reels, myself! Everyone keeps telling us all the Mals are getting the jobs, but even my town has a GSD K9. Maybe it is a New England thing?

The Boston K9 Unit has both GSDs and Malis.  Maybe even a Dutchie -  I know for sure that there is at least one Dutchie in a K9 unit near Boston.

There is a regional Police K9 event in Boston on June 1 and 2 at White Stadium.  The event includes Agility, scent work, and apprehension.  It's free and open to the public.

I think that a reason some K9 units prefer Malis is that they are smaller and easier to lift into places like attics.  I think they put them on a shield and lift the shield and when the dog is done, he goes back on the shield and gets lowered down.  But that's just speculation.

I think the GSDs have a more aggressive sounding bark and have a more intimidating look.  Once a mali gets going, they are pretty scary, but in a calm state, the GSDs are a little more fear inducing.

I got to see one of the GSDs involved in the search up close and personal.  They stuck me in a bite suit and had him go for my arm.  When a dog is hanging off your arm, I don't think it matters much of it's a GSD or a Mali.
