I noticed a knot on Rose's hind leg, near her paw. Does anyone have an idea what this may be? Below is a description and pictures.
Knot is a little bigger than a pencil erasure. The knot is very hard. Nothing is seeping out. It does not appear to be tender or painful in anyway. To my knowledge, she has never hard any damage in this area. It is on the outside of the hind leg. My 1st thought is that it is like the "rough" elbows, but it looks nothing like that and it is a deep red in color.

Fawn: you need to have your vet do a scraping of that and send to lab. NO guessing on something like that. Good luck Nan

This looks very suspicious. Need to go to the vet, it could be nothing or everything. Good luck and keep us updated!

A callous?.. Is your dog being kenneled on concrete or have you made any changes to the floor where he lies down..??..Just a suggestion..

Thanks all.
No changes Ruger. Rose is my spoiled GSD, so she does not even have to lay on the floor; she has a bed in every room of the house. I thought about a callous, but it is much harder and it is red in color.

The more I look at the picture more I remember something like this ..I think my female ~who was also spoiled and never slept on the concrete ~might have had this on the hind foot..I still think you should go have it checked to be safe, but it could be something harmless,,Let us know how it turns out,,

fawndallas, I do not much like the looks of this lesion, and echo those who urge you to have this checked out by your vet. Given the location, if it's something that ought to be surgically excised, you'd want it done while the lesion is still small like this--there's not a lot of available skin for closing the incision site on the lower part of the limbs.

GET IT CHECKED NOW!
HAVE YOUR VET REMOVE IT AND GET A BIOPSY......
THIS COULD BE SERIOUS.

I Googled a description of the lump...As I looked through the pictures I remember why it looked familiar.``and with the help of my husband better memory~~ We had a Great Dane that that had a lump like this on her hind leg in about the same spot. It was there a long time and it eventually started to ooze and bleed. We brought her in to get it checked and they recommended we get it removed. They removed the lump and it must have been benign as I do not remember anything coming of it..She lived until the rip old age of 12!!,,
Based on what I Googled there is always the potential that it could be something more serious ..

One of my dogs has something very similar. Of course I have convinced myself that my dog has mast cell cancer of the highest grade :( I always think the worst! We already made a vet appointment and I have him on Benedryl as a precaution (to control the histamines, if it is mast cell). My vet can't see us until next Thurs. If these are mast cell tumors they need to be removed pronto because they will require large margins, so even a pea-sized tumor will caus a huge incision and wound. :(
