My puppy went throught the terrible illness of Puppy Strangles and I'm unsure whether this has changed his coat or whether he was born the only one out of a litter of 10 a flatcoat

Please read my story and give me your thoughts.

Your link does not work (at least for me).  Do you mean Flatcoated Retriever?

The Flatcoated Retriever is a seperate breed from the Labrador Retriever.  There is no such thing as purebred labradors called Flatcoat Labradors.  With that said, there are "fluffy" Labradors that occasionally crop up in breedings:  http://webpages.charter.net/lofgren/Fluffy.htm and http://www.chereponlabradors.com/long_coat_gene.html .  It looks like your pup is out of unregistered parents.  It could be that there is a non-lab in his pedigree somewhere or he is a fluffy.  I would bet it is one of these two things rather than a side effect of the puppy strangles.  Whatever it is, you have one cute puppy :-)

No problem :-)  There appears to be a DNA test for the long coat gene for labradors:  http://www.vetdnacenter.com/canine-long-hair-test.html

strangles or any canine disease would not cause a dog to go from shorthair to longhair like your pup.  He's either a longhair labrador, a true Flatcoat Retriever or he's not purebred.

Considering that the lab has been crossed with the Newfoundland and the Golden in the past it's not a suprise to see a long coat crop up once in a  blue moon.

They also have some weird mismarked dogs from time to time. Check out the link
