My significant other, Marina, and I went through Jerland for our German Shepherd in April of 2012. In our case, she and I each had a friend who owned a Jerland Shepherd and we were able to meet their individual dogs in person and get their honest opinions. In BOTH cases, the owners were extremely happy with their Jerland dogs and could not emphasize enough how incredible their dogs were. In one case, our bachelor friend had an 11 year old male that was the ultimate companion to him over the years before his passing this summer. Our second friend has a 3 year old male, a son of Yari, that has been an incredible family dog. He brought his dog to our home so we could see first hand how he would be with 3 children ( 11 year old and two 8 year old twin boys). The dog was incredibly beautiful, well behaved and very tolerant with the kids as they pet and played with him. After seeing both dogs, we were set on getting a Jerland Shepherd for ourselves. Our one friend made the statement that we would pay a high price for the dog, but once we got him home and saw how amazing the new pup was, and if we knew how great he was going to be, we would pay double for him if we had to do it over again. Needless to say, a pretty strong statement for someone to make.
We made a call to Larry in March 2013, he was very informative and friendly over the phone. We got the sense that he was very passionate about his dogs and loved to speak about them. Investing that amount of money in a pet, with young children and neighbors, we wanted to make sure we covered EVERYTHING. Ultimately, we scheduled a Friday on April 27th to make the 5 hour drive from Brookfield to Barron to meet with him and potentially take home a pup. Upon arriving at the farm, it was an impressive property, well kept, with a very nice home. Larry greeted us at the door with his family pet Yari. Yari was beautiful, and had a great demeanor with us as visitors entering his home. Larry sat us at the kitchen table, had us look through photo albums of families and their Jerland dogs. He then discussed the basics of a German Shepherd dog, the importance of conformation, Shutzhund, and what makes his dogs special. After that, he went into a long discussion inquiring why we wanted a Shepherd, what we were looking for, what we knew about the breed, and how we heard about him as a breeder. He then went into a series of in depth questions to determine if we would be sound owners and what type of dog would fit our family/lifestyle. These questions included things like: where we live, what the yard is like, how old the children are, what activities we participate in, do we have people over frequently, etc. After an hours worth of questions, he looked at his chart and chose 4 dogs for us to look at. Half hour later we were outside in an enclosed grassy yard looking at the 4 pups. 3 were 10 weeks old, the 4th was 15 weeks. All 4 were incredible and we would have been happy with any one of them. Our last choice would have probably been the 15 week old as we wondered why he had not sold, plus he wasn't quite as adorable as the ten week old one's. Larry ultimately said the RIGHT dog for us was the 15 week old and lowered the price so we could have him. Larry knew we were looking for a dog that had a gentle demeanor, yet would have a masculine, strong presence given Marina is a single mom with three young boys. We thought that was impressive as her cared enough to recommend the dog and reduce the price. 30 minutes later we were driving the 5 hours home with a new male puppy, from the January 6th liter of Rudy and Gypsy Spirit. We were both impressed with how poised and well behaved the new pup ( Halo) was on the long ride home. He was a bit nervous, but never whined, had no accidents in the car, and ultimately settled down and slept in our lap between frequent stops to let him out and walk. From that first night we brought him home, he had only one accident in the house, slept peacefully through the night in his crate and was so easy to be around we were amazed. Halo will be one year old on January 6th and has grown into an incredible, amazing young adult. He is amazing with the children, jumps on their bed to say goodnight an wake them up in the morning, great with the neighbors and their dogs, behaves when company comes over, and learns commands at an incredibly fast rate. On a daily basis, as he develops more and more, we are amazed at what he picks up on and what he can do. I cannot stress enough what an incredible dog he is and all that he has brought to his new family. He had his first exposure to snow about two weeks ago and it is surreal watching him run through the yard, roll on his back and chase snow flakes. Halo has turned out to be exactly as Larry said he would and more. Unbelievable dog. Enough said.
