Hello everyone,

I currently have a working line GSD and she has a BH title. She is almost ready for IPO1. I was thinking about getting a Malinois to train for IPO1. Can you guys give me any advice about the Belgium Malinois breed?

Thanks!

-Joe

May I ask why you would put all that work into your current dog, only to switch breeds and get a Malinois to start all over again? The malinois is not a dog for everyone...

Hello Hired Dog,

I was not thinking about switching dogs. Since most of the time during competitions the Malinois breed consistently scores higher than the GSD, I was wondering if that meant they were a better breed. I'm just curious about how the Belgium Malinois compares to the GSD.

Thanks!

Joe

I am not the right person to answer this question as Malinois is my breed for 33 plus years and I am a bit biased when it comes to it. I will tell you that a correctly bred Malinois can excell  in ANY endeavor asked of it, high level sport, real life work or anything else. At the same time, the explosion of the breed, the popularity of it in working and sporting circles has not done it any favors. There are VERY few and precious breeders I would buy my dog from if I were looking for one.
The right Malinois can be a pleasure to own and train, the wrong one can be a pure nightmare from hell to live with and train...as I sai d earlier, they are not for everyone.

If you like Mali get Mali if you like GSD get GSD. Just do not expect GSD act like Mal and Mali act like GSD.
