Red Sable

Food, license, vaccinations treats etc.  For a companion animal mainly.

Does $110/ month sound unreasonable?  Not including any sort of professional training, or running back and forth to clubs.

Depends i grow our own chickens and rabbits as a main staple with kibble as the supplement.Retail cost just for the rabbits would cost about $25 each X 2 a week plus one large fryer would cost about $15 a week. $260 just in meat a month for three GSDs not counting vegis fruit eggs and #50 of kibble each month.

I think the standard is between $1000 to $1500 a year per GSD.

The fryers are the size of small turkeys. The rabbits are between 3 and 4lbs ea.

The License is $85 a year alone in my county, because my dogs are intact so i pay three times more for a license because of ERRESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS LETTIN THEIR MUTTS OVERCROWD THE DOG POUNDS. THATS A THREAD ALL IT'S OWN.

I would say between$100 & $150.00 per month per dog depending on your food, whether it be raw, raw a kibble, etc.  Nan

We are averaging 100.00 per month at the moment.  I don't expect the cost to be much more above that.  With the cost of food and his annual wellness program/shots (300.00), license (60.00) and unscheduled vet visits....our last dog cost us about 1800.00 for the year.  Hope this helps.

Red Sable I think that is probably a generous average for expenditures for pet only.  Most pet, or companion owners aren't going to be feeding raw but may feed a high quality kibble.  They may do some basic obedience at some place like pet smart.  annual vet visit of approx. 150 -200 dollars.  Though sometimes I think I pay for my vet's vacations.

I think we could save money by letting our GSDs know the difference between companion, police K9, Shutzhund, or A show line. Then you could feed accordingly.

Just a thought because people like to segregate that way. Probably has something to do with the analality of being a dog owner.

J I don't think it matters what the dog is used for. but rather the level of dog education of pet owner versus those who work their dogs.  I spend way more then what was stated by Red Sable,  but at the same time not everyone has the same outlook.

Red Sable if you are paying $110.00 a month I envy you.

Seeing how I built a seperate vehicle just for hauling him around, this year is probably going to average around a $1,000.00 a month.

Next year it will come down but be well above $110.00.

I have town water here and I refuse to give the dog chlorine flavored water. He drinks almost a gallon a day. Bottled spring water is around a $1.00 a gallon so water alone is around $30.00 a month.

I'm guessing but next year will easily be $150/$160 a month.

I enjoy spoiling him. LOL

At $110.00 a month you're doing well IMO...

On mine, I average about $100/dog.  That is for food, toys, normal vet care.   Keeping in mind, I now have 5 dogs, so I can get a quantity discount on things like standard vet care.

VKGSDs

Food (kibble, plus some raw which I get free) - probably $50 (I get about 2 bags a month but have more than one dog)
Vet - nothing, he only sees a vet when actually ill/injured or needs a 3 year rabies vaccine
Supplements - nothing right now
Heartworm preventative - $45 for the bottle which lasts 3 years and I have 2 dogs right now so that's only 63 cents per dog per month
Flyball - $10 a month plus $5 each training session of which there are 3 a month so $25
Flyball tournament - I usually do one tournament every 2 months so $30 entry fee plus $120 for the hotel and we'll say $75 in gas divided by 2 is $113
Schutzhund - $20 a month but gas is the killer!  I go almost 3 hours each way and try to go twice a month other than deep winter so with gas it's more like $120

We'll also say I do one Schutzhund or similar trial a year at $60, one SV show at $60, a few UKC conformation shows at $19, and I do a ton of events at the Premier and spend about $100 per dog there in entry fees so added up and divided out that's about $25/mo in entries and with gas and hotel added more like $60/mo.
