OK...so what is so bad about.....quality.....canned dog food?
I feed a little canned dog food to make a gravy for my dogs evening meal.
They get a brand called Hound and Gatos......This brand is.....soy free.....grain free.....Artificial Flavor Free.....Artificial Preservative free....and Color free.
The first and main ingredient is only meat followed by water and supplements.
Here's their website: http://houndgatos.com/
They also get Merrick's Before Grain......This brand is grain free.....uses no products from china....No Artificial Flavor.....No Artificial Preservatives and No added color.
The first and main ingredient is only meat followed by broth, dried egg product and supplements.
Here's their website: http://www.merrickpetcare.com/our-story/
Also, I looked up each of the ingredients following the meat and I did not find anything harmful about them.
Maybe I'm missing something.....if so please tell me....because I don't understand why some think it is the worst thing you can feed your dog.
Thanks,
Cheri

Look at the thread on here: "Found this video on pet food. WARNING attached."

The thread Joanro referred you to aside, the reason I don't like to feed wet / canned as the
normal diet is twofold. 1 I found it does not help to keep teeth as clean as a kibble.
2 On grounds of cost - the majority of canned foods you pay for about 1/2 to 3/4 water
content ! I still use cans occasionally - if I want to disguise the taste of pills etc, or
sometimes when I think a particular dog needs to have extra fluids got into him/her,
generally as part of medical treatment, or if a dog has been unwell and off its food and
just needs a little tempting to regain normal appetite. So it has its uses.

I read that thread and watched the video. It was certainly shocking and terrible to see peoples beloved pets being treated like that.
However, what I did not see was......any dog food brand names listed, the name or agency of the investigator taking the video, or anything on the video that indicated the stuff was used as an ingredient in canned dog food. I'm not saying that stuff like that doesn't happen, but IMOP the credibility of the video is lacking.
Also, why place all canned and kibble manufacturers in the same quality basket?
I try to educate my self and form opinions about dog nutrition based on facts and research.

Hundmutter...I agree.
I do not and would not feed my dogs a diet that consisted solely of canned dog food.
I mix it with water to form a gravy that gets poured over their kibble at dinner time. At breakfast they get enough water (only) added to float the kibble in their bowels.

I truly believe there are good dog food manufacturers and bad ones. If you read dog food advisor.com there are good reviews on there and bad ones. How is your dog doing on the food. It is grain free and merrick is a five star food. If you have time you could always make some stew for you dog yourself in a slow cooker, by adding liver and heart, green beans, a handful of blueberries, water for gravy. carrots and sweet potato. Let it simmer all day in the cooker then put it in containers in the freezer. Much less expensive and perfectly fine. you could add a tablespoon of ground flax seed, just remember no onions. sometimes on sunday nights grocery stores put all their meat on sale, good time to buy for the dog.

Hi Eldee.....Thanks for the stew idea......I will try that out.
To answer your question......my dogs do great on the diet plan I feed them.....They are fit...have shiny coats.... lots of energy....and over all very healthy.

I dont see any problem feeding a quality can food. And by quality I mean Taste of the Wild, Solid Gold etc. There are minimal preservatives because the food is canned. I have never found it to work for me. Always gives my dogs the runs.
I disagree that Kibble keeps teeth clean. Actually most kibble sticks to the teeth and causes decay.
And although I havent seen the video about food, dogfood companies do use companion animals in food. Read "Foods Pets Die For" is an excellent book that talks about this. It is several years old so if it was going on then, not too sure much has changed. I know its been going on for years. Dog food companies are not allowed to print on the bag that the food is human grade. That debate, in itself, was huge for some time, then slowly died down.

If your dogs are doing fine, coats shiny and they are a nice weight and have perfect poops you know what they say.....
If it ain't broke.....
The stew is just a nice idea to give your dogs a break from processed kibble and canned food. Imagine if you had to sit down to a meal of kibble every day for the rest of your life. It has only been recently that I have started making the girls a stew every once in a while. It's good for them. It is just hard to keep husbands out of the crock pot as it smells so good. I found that if I put a big sign above the cooker that says dog food, he stays away.

Bhaugh, I know lots of people hold that opinion.
All I can tell you is that I took over a large number of GSDs
who had been eating a regular twice daily mix of dry and
canned food. They all had yellow/brown teeth, even the
younger ones.
I changed them to eating just the kibble. Within a couple
of months they all had clean white shiny teeth, even the
older ones.
Nothing else but dry food (wetted with a little hot water to kill
storage mites and add 'gravy'); plus, rawhide chews and bones
(maybe a bit more frequently than they'd been given those). No
vet scrapes, no doggy toothbrushes.
Was enough to convince me ...
Linda.
