What is the best and most economical fly repellent? I have seem some available in a tube for horses.

I heard that some needs only be applied less than once a day.

Is it safe to use on pregnant bitch?

I use the fly spray bottled for horses, and there are several that have a 28 day lasting effect, so only need to be applied every 3-4 weeks.

Rather than a product that requires daily application, I use Bio-spot. A few drops on the ears once a month and no lies or gnats. If the flies are persistent and bite the hocks, a little dab'll do ya there as well.

Here's a thread I wrote on this topic last year that provides a summary of the products that have been discussed on this list.

The black flies and horse flies at Point Pelee National Park (where we take the dogs swimming) are so aggressive that maximum strength DEET does nothing to repel them. The horse flies can bite through summer weight pants and shirts so you can imagine what happens to German Shepherd ear tips in under a minute. I apply UltraShield Ex with a soft cloth to the dogs' ear tips and it actually works. I only apply the spray to their ear tips since it is toxic to fish so I want to use as little as possible.

My first German Shepherd escaped from the boarding kennel while we were on vacation. We spent several emotional weeks searching, placing posters, calling for her, laying scent trails to home... after a full month she was seen near the kennel and came home to us very skinny, with a healed broken pelvis. There had been rain but we couldn't figure out what she had eaten while laying broken in the woods... until we noticed her new ability. She had become the best fly catcher in the world, snapping those things out of the air and eating them right down. Catching and eating flies was her favorite hobby the rest of her life and I think had we put repellent on, she would have been heartbroken.
