I know there is money to be made, but come on now.! I took in four yorkie/shitzu mix pups(8 months old) last month. They were headed to the dog pound, and I hate the dog pound.
Anyway, I wormed them, gave them shots, 5 way and bathes. I had an older woman come for one of them. I explained their story, basic neglect, and told her and WROTE IT OUT for the vet,
One shot Aug 17, dewormed. Sept 5, she picks up dog, I give him another shot, in her prescense, write it on the record card, AND give her the vile. I told her tell the vet you witnessed the shot being given. So, she just calls me to tell me how wonderful this little guy is, she loves him so much, AND, the vet said he needed another shot and worming the day after he was given a shot. This is a 5lb dog. Just really pisses me off!
(Sorry about the run-on sentence, I am on my phone)

And that is a Vet who needs to be reported to AVMA. Absolutely disgusting behavior. I worked for a Vet who studied the adverse reaction to yearly vaccination. The results of the study were horrifying. Dr. Lester is one of the pioneers here who was ( retired) working to have yearly vaccination protocol eliminated. She is a firm believer in titer testing.

like Blitzen says....money.
Your adopter needs a new vet, he/she sucks.
Though I've heard many stories about vets who overvaccinate, none of the vets I've gone too have ever insisted on vaccines I didn't want, nor have any of them ever challenged me when I tell them I do my own vaccinations. So those reasonable vets are out there.

Whichever side one comes down on in the great 'boosters' debate, this scenario
seems entirely wrong, of itself. Way too much assault on this little guy;
particularly since the vet apparently combined the extra shot with a wormer
all in one go. Yes I'd put in a complaint - but do you know whether this owner
will do so ?

Never mind. Please, when your dog is ill, don't bother to call those money-grubbing veterinarians. All they care about is money, not animals.

What are the vaccinations that are a must and what are the vaccinations our puppies and dogs can do fine without?
I hear Distemper and Rabies are good and a must for any dog at any age if one is not sure what the dog was or wasn't given earlier.
Ibrahim.

hexe- no one is saying ALL vets are no good, money grubbing mongers or that there is no need for them, but in this case, there really was no good reason, other than for this vet to make a buck, to give this dog another set of shots. I mean come on now, the dog had JUST received his shot, THE DAY BEFORE. It is not as if he had NO history.
Ibrahim-In my area of NY, the only thing the dogs really need a vaccine for is Rabies, and I like to be sure they have distemper and parvo . Parvo is pretty prevalent around this area, and thanks to. Many vaccinating, distemper is ALMOST non-existent, at least in domesticated animals .

Glad my vets aren't like that! My friend and I do some of our own vax and I just show the vet the label and they add it to my dog's record. Also the rescue I foster for takes our dogs to the same vet hospital and they are very careful to only do one thing at a time. My last dog was a 7 month old pit bull and he had a terrible skin infection. The vet did not give him ANY vax at all because he wanted to treat the skin first, then the dog could come back and finish whatever vax he needed. He was also careful about what flea/tick protection to use while the dog was being treated.

kitkat, does that vet know you from a ham sandwich?
No.
So why on earth do you expect that vet to take the 'word'--in this case, a piece of paper--of someone who claims the dog's shots were up to date?
This subject is an immovable object, and I limit the amount of effort and emotion I'll put into it for my own sanity's sake.
In the end, I am SURE the vet did not FORCE a vaccination and deworming on the client's dog--the client had the option of declining both treatments. The client had the option of taking their dog and leaving.
But it's the vet fault, absolutely. They just had to have that money, so they could pay for their Mazeratis and their polo ponies.
