The heat will kill them the same way it killed your plott /mix. Sorry for your loss.

So dogs will seriously die from it outside if they have shade and water? Or is some sort of neglect involved?

I live in north florida and have never had issues. we have rescued many different breeds of dogs and never had problems with the heat. but we do take certain precautions. lots of shade no matter what time of day. LOTS of water. fresh 5 gal every day. never car rides where you are going to leave the dog in the car unattended at all. Now all our dogs are inside except restroom. front yard is mostly shade from big oak trees. Sun is a killer for dogs or people. if they can't get out of the sun they will be in trouble fast regardless of coat color.

I would think that a plott hound could deal better with the heat than an AM bulldog or a Great Dane. Maybe a catahoula hound would suit your area better than a bulldog or a dane. If you end up getting a bulldog, try not to get one that has a super thick body and short face---this will hurt them in the heat.
Lots of shade, big bucket of water (5+ gallons) (make sure the water is well shaded too!) swimming pool full of ice and perhaps make them a big mudhole in the dirt too (if the dogs don't come in the house) and a misting system under the shaded area. These things will help keep your dogs cool enough in hot weather.

RS, the shade is where the temperature is measured. So if it is one hundred plus degrees, that what it is in the shade. Being exposed to extreme temps like those, is dangerous for a dog and a human. The longer the exposure, the greater the risk.

We've had temps over a hundred a couple of times this year, ( no problems) more so with the humidity (whicih we are famous for!) but I imagine Texas is, of course even hotter than that.
Thanks for the feedback. :)
