Hello. I just have one question. If a dog is DM CLEAR (female) and is bred with a DM CARRIER (male), will the puppies be DM CLEAR or half CARRIER and half CLEAR? I don't fully understand it because I read the description and such on a breeder's website that said if a dog is CLEAR and is bred to a CARRIER, the puppies will all be CLEAR. Any input is appreciated :D

The puppies will get one gene from each parent. If one parent is clear/clear and the other is clear/carrier, then your options look like this:
So, half of the puppies could be carriers (clear/carrier) and half will be clear (clear/clear). Note that none of these dogs will be at risk of getting DM, according to the current DNA test.

Clear | Clear | |
---|---|---|
Carrier | Clear/Carrier | Clear/Carrier |
Clear | Clear/Clear | Clear/Clear |
So, half of the puppies could be carriers (clear/carrier) and half will be clear (clear/clear). Note that none of these dogs will be at risk of getting DM, according to the current DNA test.

The site I found say breeding normal/carrier says 75% of puppies will be normal and 25% will be carriers.

They did bad math? You can look at the Punnett square and see how it falls out.

what they are saying is they will be clear of getting DM, you will still get both clear and carriers, the way it works is the puppy will pick up 1 gene from mom ( she is Clear/clear ) which would be clear and 1 gene from dad ( clear/carrier) which would be clear or carrier , as he carries both. hope this helps. i am going to try a clear to carrier litter and see how many come up carriers, i am intrested to know the true numbers, yes as the chart says it should be 50/50. i do think if you breed to a carrier you should get the pups DM tested so you know which ones u can sell to a breeder as with most people they are not going to test them so as the breeder you should be responsible, to know who is a carrier. but for pet people it should not be a problem. i will also say that this test is not 100% either , but its a good starting point.

Note that while statistically you might get half clear and half carrier you could also get any combination of the two. In other words, you could get all clears or all carriers.

No puppy from that breeding will be at risk of DM but they have a 50 50 chance of being Clear or Carrier.

50/50 chance of being a carrier, but not have the disease.
