Usually both.

Firstly, the vulva will start to look swollen/enlarged, for a couple of days, then, the first sign of blood, which is usually "darker"(coca-cola dark red) than the normal blood red. As the heat progress, . . . consult your vet to know more.

I found with one of my dogs that the vulva would get quite large before the first spot of blood. Standing heat would happen 11 to 13 days after the first show of blood. Each female is different, so watch closely, and learn her individual pattern if you are planning to breed.

the 1st day of a females heat cycle would be the first sign of blood.

YOU NEED TO WATCH VERY CLOSELY, IF YOUDR PLANNING ON BREEDING.
IF YOU DO, THEN THE FIRST DAY OF SPOTTING (BLOOD) IS THE DAY YOU COUNT.
IT CAN BE ANYWHERE FROM 10-14 DAYS AFTER THAT U BREED.
WHEN SHE FLAGS HER TAIL SHE IS READY !

Some females are very tidy and no blood may be seen. So the soft swollen look of her vulva will most likely be your first clue. On the other hand some girls bleed like stuck pigs! No trouble spotting the signs there. Flagging and the vulva moving up when you pet her butt is an indication for readyness. But dogs are pretty good at figuering this stuff outwith out our interference. Unless your traveling to meet the stud.
Good luck and be viligent as every ugly mutt in the neighborhood will suddenly become super athletes and start jumping fences.

If in doubt you can do progesterone testing with the help of a qualifed veterinarian. Also there are vaginal dip sticks and other tools but I hear some are better than others. The progesterone testing is very calculated. Although nothing stands above God and His good timing.

Also they usually begin licking themselves before you ever see blood--if you notice this and check you will usually see they are swollen. And I agree they usually swell first.

i will disagree as not all dog swell first ,some swell after they start to bleed , each female is very different. know your female , so next time you will know all the signs.
