Hello everyone again! I finally got the pictures to show. Again, I saw people do this, so I thought I would try too. I had my 2 year old male OFAed 2 days ago. The doctor said to him the hips and elbows look good, and he doesn't see anything wrong with them. I was wondering if you could give me your opinions on what you think OFA will say, and on the positioning. The x-ray pictures aren't great because I took them with my phone. They don't put them on CDs, but you could still see them pretty well. Thank you everyone for your input. I can give more information about him if you would like.

You can see his x-rays on my website: http://www.germanshepherdsnw.com/reamhded.htm

I see no signs of degenerative changes, but I don't think I've ever seen femoral heads that look quite like that. I think the knees/legs are rotating out too much, causing the angle to be one I'm not used to seeing.

Ok thank you. The doctor is very experienced, and knows how to place the dogs right. So I believe that he did everything right. I haven't really seen ones like that either. They look very nice and round.

no, hon, your doctor didnot do everything right.  i agree with christine.  the positioning could definately be better.
your dog should still score a good-ofa.

Oh alright thank you. We will try better next time with my other dogs. See, these x-rays were taken naturally, he doesn't like to put them to sleep to do it. So it was a bit hard, but I was happy because I didn't want to put him to sleep for no reason.

They look good to excellent to me, but one can't second guess OFA so it will be interesting to see what they say. Positioning could be better, could make the difference in the rating, but the xray is diagnostic. I like dogs to be sedated for xrays. Getting a better picture is one of the reasons.

It looks like OFA is getting a little stricter with GSD hips, so I'm going to revise my guess to fair to good. Normal is normal.

Ok thank you for the reply. I will definetely let you know what they say. If I get a fair maybe I will try it again and hopefully get better positoning, because I think his hips are good. Yes the doctor said that OFA sometimes surprises him!

Don't get too hung up on hip ratings, normal is normal. Many times the ratings are the results of the skill of the techs doing the positioning and not the dog's hip conformation. I've got better hips out of a fair sire - 4 excellents, 3 goods out of 7 puppies, than I did out of an excellent sire - 2 severes out of 9. Had 2 littermates fail, mild HD, they were done again, both got goods. Go figure......

Wow that's very interesting thank you for sharing that. So yes now I understand that as long as the hips are normal, that is good, and it is most important that the puppies from those dogs have no problems. What about the parents of those two males? What were their hips like?
