So, I'm starting to train, taking it slow and not going too many miles at first. Last night I took Little Dude and we just ran a mile this time. One part of it was a very steep hill so we walked the hill, but my question is, how far can I run him? He turned one back on April 10th. I "think" he's done growing in height, pretty positive he is, considering he's taller than any of my Huskies, I think he just has filling out to do.   Any ideas though? None of my other dogs did any running until they were around 2 I think, though that was running along side a bike or a "Gator".....last night it was me running with LD so the speed was not as fast, nor did we go as far as the other dogs would have.

How old and training for what? If you know any mushers, I think they could best answer your questions about training him. Some put their 8, 9 month olds on drag sledges or run them with an ATV while others wait until they are older. Maybe your breeder can give you some pointers? GSD's are going to be on  a far different training schedule than a northern breed.

No no no Blitzen lol.  "I'm training".....Little Dude my Husky (one year of age back on April 10th) is the one running with me, more so just a "running partner". I just don't want to run him too far for his age.. because I didn't know how much he can take at that age.   The other Huskies at two were running along side the gator, or the bike.  I'm not running the Shepherd yet at all, he's only just now 17 weeks.  Aside from all of that, "I'm" not use to running, so I'm going to have to build myself up as well.

I'm sure he'll let you know. Huskies love to run. Glad to hear he's gotten big. Start slow, just like for you, build up both of your stamina.

Yeah, I got that it's a Sibe, just didn't know what you were training him for. Don't ever depend on a nothern breed to know when it's had enough. They will run til they drop dead literally. Since you're not yet an Olympic class marathon runner, I'd think that he should be able to go as far and as fast as you can.

I mentioned that GSD's are trained differently because most of the response you will get here will be from GSD owners even though you posted to the all breed forum. As far as I know Sibe breeders don't routinely read or post to this board, do they? Maybe they use the Sibe forum... dunno.

Hey Blitzen. The sibe forum is used about as often as an old man with COPD climbs MT. Everest.  Which is....never lol.  I do understand with my adult dogs that they will run till they "drop dead", they absolutely LOVE to run.  With them I have a pretty good idea of how much they can take, who can go longer, etc etc.  Little Dude right now is 23 and 1/2 inches at the shoulders, half an inch taller than Max, and LD is at the height of the standards, he's only 50 lbs now though due to lack of muscle/filling out because of his age. Lean, very agile,  but being that we're running on pavement.....and his age...I just wasn't sure. He seemed to do really well, he didn't seem too tired or anything, and didn't seem too hot. He walked normally after that as well, no signs of any fatigue or stress on his body, so I guess a mile is a good start. Unfortunately the heat is really trying to kick up here.  Tomorrow our high will be 90........That's like, mid summer temps here (late summer can be hotter and way more humid), this morning it was 65 at just 6 and in the mid 70s by the time I walked the pack about two hours later. We're suppose to have lows in the high 40s/low 50s this time of year, not almost 70, the highs should be in the mid 70s.  Last night I made sure to wait late, about 740 we went for the run, so I'll keep it late every night, and if it gets too hot....I guess I'll be doing it by myself, as much as I hate doing things like that by msyself, it's more easy for me to be motivated when I have a dog with me, it's just more fun that way.  Hopefully it will cool down though somewhat, but I think I may start taking him out to Luther Lake here, it's where a lot of people run or walk. It's not much of a "lake" being it's only one mile around the whole thing, but it's flat all the way around (there is a road that goes around the whole thing) and good to start training on.

GSDGuy08, there is a forum JUST for Huskies, the members there are NOTHING like some here. (not refering to anyone in THIS thread, mind you) To be blunt, that forum/website is better monitored, they do NOT take shit. Any sign of it, you are OFF, or suspended, it is very much a family website.

When I had my husky, that was the forum I went to. Everyone there is super nice, and its ALL huskies, nothing else. Pretty knowledable bunch, too.

Who knows, maybe you already belong to it? They really have a "family atmosphere", and like I said, a great bunch of people (many of them from the UK, but USA users frequent there as well)

Well, we did another mile tonight. I think I'm going to try to go out to the lake and run him until I get trained better just because that hill is killing me, and my mile time for that matter. It's so steep that I have to walk it.   Little Dude did pretty good though, no signs of fatigue this time either, and it cooled off enough by the time we went.

DDRCzechfan, I think I may be part of that forum, but I never use it. There was one I joined in the past, made a few posts on it....forgot what email, password, user name, etc that I used lol and never tried to get on there again.

Forgot to mention, GSDGuy08, that Avatar of Auggie is just beyond comical! I love it!
