Do you let you dogs out and walk on the designated pet area of highway rest stops ?
I think these are areas laden with bacteria, virusus and parasites.
I always try to avoid them and walk on other parts even if yield at.
Is there any study or strong professional opinion?

On my recent trip to Vegas, I liked the signs warning of scorpions and rattlesnakes. That would be a disaster for sure.

We travel a lot with our dogs and I am always concerned about walking our dogs at the rest areas. We try to walk our dogs far beyond the designated pet area and the picnic area. We also will try to walk them when we stop for our meals at a fast food restaurant rather than opt for the rest area.

If all pet owners would adequately clean up behind their pets, there wouldn't be any need for a 'designated pet area'... :^\
That said, I don't worry over much about them, but I also wouldn't walk a dog that's 'high risk' for picking up anything in those area, either--puppies that haven't completed their vaccinations, or extremely aged dogs whose health is failing, for example.

my dogs have always gone everywhere without a second thought, and we will continue to do so. The real danger to your pets are even bringing them in the car in the first place. That's where bad shit is going to happen to them. Why sweat the petty stuff?

I search out places that I can reasonably suppose NO dog has been for years, if ever.
Industrial parks featuring sweeping, well kept lawns, mud-free parking, 24 hr. security and good lighting after dark are a favorite with me.

Bee....OMG that's too funny :) He...He...right beside the dog waste station there is a Purell Paw Wipes dispenser.
We travel a lot with our dogs and NEVER stop at rest stops for them.
I have to agree that they are nothing but a playground for all kinds of nastiness.
We usually let the dogs out (on leash) at areas people wouldn't normally stop at....like down a dirt road off the highway.

I don't worry about it, I'm not going to go through life trying to keep my dogs in a plastic bubble. From what I have seen at rest stops there are just as many people walking their dogs away from the designated area, probably for the reasons mentioned, as there are walking them in the designated area. Not to mention the owners of the dogs who walked them in the designated area then walk around the rest stop, in and out of the rest room, etc tracking any "issues" along with them, so even if you don't get your dogs out of the car you could still be exposing them to "stuff".

"stuff" is everywhere. Why people think they're going to avoid it is kind of funny. Yeah, you don't want to go swim in a manure pit, but a little common sense should keep you from doing that.
You have 10X's more bacterial cells in YOUR body at this moment, than you have human cells that make you, you. You're more bacterial than you are yourself. It's like that everywhere. Why people are such freaks about "germs" I'll never know. If your dog is that weak it can't walk thru a wayside pet walk, maybe it's time to demand better dogs. I have a feeling thousands of years of evolution make a walk thru a wayside pretty easy, maybe we should quit messing it up by breeding such junk.
