Okay, so there are two dogs that constantly keep coming to our yard. We have fields on both sides of our yard, our yard is fenced in/gated, and there is a field behind our yard as well....All of the fields there and throughout down the road are our family's. Anyway....There is a trailor park behind the back field, and two dogs constantly keep coming up to our yard. While they may be friendly, it's becoming quite annoying, and tonight.....what I thought was going to eventually happen.....happened. Three of my dogs I never worry about this, but my youngest dog (the one I figured would do this) got out tonight. Being that it's night, and I had let them outside to go to the bathroom while I got a few things done inside......I have no clue where he got out. So hopefully tomorrow if it's not raining as much as they say it will, I can find out where he got out, and fix it in the fence. We should be redoing the entire fence fairly soon, hopefully to make it taller, and better quality fence as well. Regardless of that, what can I do about these dogs that keep coming up here? They were up here the other night at 10 pm, the big one (probably 90 to 100 lbs or more) started jumping on our gate and started barking as well. I wasn't going to have him doing that since I was about to go to bed.....so I ran him off. It's just getting frustrating because it happens too often. My youngest dog getting out tonight is something I was expecting to happen eventually since they keep coming up here, and I shouldn't have to leash my own dog in a fenced in yard when I let them out to go to the bathroom, not to mention he could have been hit by a car. So tomorrow I fix the place in the fence (once I find it) that he got out.......but what should I do about the two dogs? They're people friendly, and dog friendly too, ones a Beagle......The other is a retriever mix, with a gimp back leg that has no function what-so-ever.....My guess is he's already been hit by a car....

Two words, paint ball.
If not, and provided you live in an area that allows it .357 Mag w/full load blanks. Honestly, we had a problem with
dogs coming up to my house too and I have never had one come back after being "shot" at. If a dog comes up here,
it has one "free pass". Fortunately, I've never had to go any further. People out here don't give a crap and let their
dogs wander.

Call Animal Control and explain the problem, i really wouldnt suggest hurting them or scaring them if they are friendly as it would not be self defence and you could get blamed if they were hurt and nobody likes a vet bill through their door, i also wouldnt suggest going to find the owner yourself, some people do not know how to look after themselves or their animals and have a real bad attitude to people telling them the truth, their is no common ground or manners with some people. I think if you call Animal control and tell them they are pulling out your trash, barking at you and bullying your dog/s that may get them to do something about them.

You will not get in trouble for SCARING them!!!! They would not get hurt if they weren't out of THEIR yard!!!!!!!!!
Most laws allow for the protection of YOUR dogs, livestock etc... from wandering dogs. Again, it depends on where
you live.
Animal control will not do anything about loose dogs where I live if they are not trying to hurt YOU. But also on the
law books is a law that states any dog without a collar, harassing your dogs/livestock may be shot on sight.
I don't like that and would prefer to scare the crap out of them rather then kill them.

Mimi.......Our animal conrol is useless. The one time a dog of mine was attacked while on a walk, animal control said they'd be out there that day to talk to the owners of a dog who jumped their fence (different dog, this was on our walk in the subdivisions).......next door neighbors said the animal conrol never came. I won't get in trouble for hurting them, think about it......they're very likely to get hit by a car at some point if they travel like they do. I'm pretty certain I "know" though I've never met the owner of this dog. I remember before this woman....you could hear her talk from a mile away it seems......and she has the 50 year smoker deep voice....... yelling Benjamin!!! come here!!!! over and over and over....And this was when that dog first started coming up to our yard. Eventually she quit yelling that, and eventually he got his Beagle side-kick so to speak. I don't go down in the trailor park, there have been three meth labs busted down there, and people have been shot there as well. During spring-late fall we can't see them, period, because of all the bushes/trees on/over our fences and how high they get, and in the summer we let the fields grow up to eventually cut hay, but the two dogs are coming around to the front gate. And the thing is, they aren't pulling trash (I never said that), we're just barely out of the city limits so we don't have trash left out the gate to be picked up. They actually want to play with my dogs.....which is the problem. My oldest three listen 100% of the time basically, but it draws the youngest dog who into wanting to play. There will be times I don't even know the dogs are at our fence, sometimes they'll be in the back or at the side, and he'll end up going to wherever they are and trying to get through to see them. It's not a matter of they're "bullying him", it's their constant coming up here could get my dog hurt or possibly killed. Not to mention, people around here think he looks like a wolf....in this redneck city, my dog will be shot if he's loose so we can't have this.
Melba, you gave me an idea. I currently don't have a gun (other than an old bb gun), but someone in our subdivision (I'm training her dog) has this thing that will shock the living crap out of someone....it also makes this incredible loud noise to the point that even my ears were hurting, and lights started flashing on it too, and then it made this popping noise over and over.....I may borrow it for a few days. It's not that I want to be mean to this dog, I just won't risk losing my own dog, with him possibly getting hurt or killed.

I love the idea of a paint gun, it sends a clear message to the owner........with minimal pain for the dog.
You may be able to "rent" live traps from Animal Control, if you can catch them you can send them off to a no-kill shelter.

We have a similar problem with our neighbor 2 doors down. Our back yard is completely fenced in but my neighbors do not have a fence and let their 3 teacup Chihuahuas out 3 or 4 times a day. They love to run our fence which annoys my gsds. I think my dogs would have them for a snack if they could get to them. There is a leash law in our county but we live out of the city limits in a large county and animal control does not have the manpower to check on dogs running off leash especially out of the city limits. My neighbors think their dogs have fun "playing" with mine by running our fence. I'm afraid one of my dogs will kill one of their dogs given the chance.

sitasmom......what if I just leashed them and drove them off to a no kill shelter? I mean there is no problem with friendliness on the dogs part, I'm positive they'd actually come up to me if I went out the gate to them just because of how they've acted the numerous times I've seen them when I'm on our road itself starting my walk. Tails wagging, play gestures, and just a goofy temperament. I think they could easily find new, better homes. The Beagle looks like a really sweet dog too, he's just tagging along with the big dog.
ggturner....I don't pity you with the little Chihuahuas lol. My neighbor down the road probably understands where you're coming from, though his neighbor does have a fence....with three tiny little Yorkies who are probably 3 lbs at most....barking all the time at his Rottie.....Both yards over there are fenced, but with about two feet of space inbetween the fences.....If that Rottie could, she'd eat every one of those little dogs. I definitely understand your concern though, with your dog possibly killing one of those. Mine would look at anything that small as prey....unless I bring it into the pack, or unless it's a puppy of Sierras.

Sitasmom- I always loved the idea of the paint gun because it DOES mark them and sends a message to the owners in no uncertain terms
that their dogs are where they shouldn't be and it's unappreciated. They do hurt pretty bad and leave giant bruises on a human, but is a
non-lethal alternative.
GSDguy08- what about an airhorn?
You could bring them to your county animal control if they will go with you. Maybe after having to bail the dogs out (if they even do) multiple
times, they will get the point.
ggturner- That really stinks. Have you thought about one of those motion activated sprinklers for squirrels and other varmint? Set to soak the
little rats on approach of the fence, of course :)

I agree with Melba, for what it's worth.
When I lived out in the country, and had over 10 unfenced acres, I used to get the neighbor's dogs over all the time too. Sadly, these ones were agressive, and I had to take MY dog to the vet more than once because one of the asshole neighbor's dogs jumped MY fence to get at my dog. The neighbor never truly believed that my dog didn't jump her own fence to get to their dog, so I did what any mom would do...I protected my kid.
At first, I purchased a simple air horn. It scared off the dog the first time for over three days, when normally we were visited daily by the dog. Finally, after the third visit to the vet to get my dog stitched up, I said to hell with it. I bought myself a BB Gun. Scared the dog off for about a week, but the dog was such a distance away, apparently it just felt like a bee sting. So, the damn dog came back, I borrowed my brother in law's paint ball gun. I didn't hold back, I spattered that nasty mutt up so bad you would thought I'd let him run wild in a paint mixer.
The neighbors called me less than 20 minutes after "sweet little Fluffy" was shot up and demanded to know WHY I had done what I had done, knowing it was obviously me because of all of my complaints. Luckily, I'm not stupid. At least not in most aspects LOL - So, I had actually used the recording feature on my camera and gotten over 2 weeks of daily visits recorded to show them.
What was the end result? Little "Fluffy" was chained in his own damn yard, and they gave me $500 toward my vet bills for Lilah.
