LOL My friend actual had her bull dogs in dog houses like that as she still lived in SC. As she moved to NC (not too far from Mooresville!) animal control came one day and said they are illegal to use as dog houses in the county she lives in now.

I would say that blue barrel isn't worth 2 cents now that it has a big hole in it:)

This company has about 300 dogs. I used to live a couple of miles fron their facility. The dogs ALL sleep in barrels, with the front of the barrel completely open. I don't know if they maybe hang a piece of canvas over the opening in winter or not.

One of the guys that looks after the dogs says the barrels are easier to clean and don't have corners that might harbour fleas. They are carefully anchored so they don't roll around.

Animal rights people have been trying to close Chocpaw down for years, without success. The dogs are very well looked after, but are chained when not working. That's how it's always been done in the north with sled dogs.

Bitches whelp indoors, under supervision. When the pups are weaned, they are moved to outdoor pens with small sheds for shelter.

Sunsilver is correct, this is a very common way for mushers to keep sleddogs. It's been an issue with humane societies for years.

Just for arguments sake, others than questionable insulation in some of the cheaper doghouses, what is the difference? I don't own a single barrel but if placed in the right location and all things else being taken care off (cleaning, places to run, feed etc) I don't find them so terribly objectable. I would not advocate them in the south for sure. But could imagine that they provide good and solid shelter in some instances?

It would depend on the dog. If the dog is left outside all the time, and has a nice, thick winter coat, I think it would do just fine. However, there is NO insulation in a barrel. It only provides shelter from the elements. I imagine it would get pretty hot inside it in the summer, even in northern climates, so the dog would need a shady place to lie on hot days. The opening to the barrel would also need to be protected from blowing snow and rain.

It's not ideal, but it sure beats chaining your dog outside, and leaving it without shelter of any kind, as is often done in the north with huskies and other types of sled dogs.  Remember the movie, Eight Below?
