One of the guys that looks after the dogs says the barrels are easier to clean and don't have corners that might harbour fleas. They are carefully anchored so they don't roll around.
Animal rights people have been trying to close Chocpaw down for years, without success. The dogs are very well looked after, but are chained when not working. That's how it's always been done in the north with sled dogs.
Bitches whelp indoors, under supervision. When the pups are weaned, they are moved to outdoor pens with small sheds for shelter.

It would depend on the dog. If the dog is left outside all the time, and has a nice, thick winter coat, I think it would do just fine. However, there is NO insulation in a barrel. It only provides shelter from the elements. I imagine it would get pretty hot inside it in the summer, even in northern climates, so the dog would need a shady place to lie on hot days. The opening to the barrel would also need to be protected from blowing snow and rain.
It's not ideal, but it sure beats chaining your dog outside, and leaving it without shelter of any kind, as is often done in the north with huskies and other types of sled dogs. Remember the movie, Eight Below?
