Why do you think people do a Showline X Working line Breedings...

Do you think they're actually trying to achieve something in their breeding choice...

...or...

Do you think they're just trying to have a litter to make money...

...or...

Do you think people really don't understand the differences and are just breeding 2 dogs...

I've always thought that it would improve the conformation of the WL, and improve workability in the SL. That is just what I have seen anyways.

But I think a lot of WL's have much better structure than SL's anyway...

I think it depends on the dogs. 
Me, I'd like to see more calmness bred back into the GSD.  Are the showlines better in that regard?

who knows. probably all of the above haha. I have a 3/4 working line 1/4 showline pup, and she's great. a lot calmer than most WL, smaller and more compact without the arched back of SL, drives of WL although not as high as most. she's a great dog overall

Yes, yes and yes - depends on the kennel - I also think the same thing (yes, yes and yes) for WL/WL & SL/SL breeding too.

Many years back some showlines were bred to Asko vd Lutter,
and while some of the offspring went on to do reasonably well
in working events, no one really wanted to touch them for breeding,
at least not the males. Perhaps different with the females,
they could be bred back to a leistungs line.

While that type of breeding can produce some decent dogs,
there is a lot of "eeeeh" dogs that come from it.
And usually, the resulting offspring that do turn out decent,
don't produce themselves.

I believe I see the differences.
I am NOT trying to make $... I want to see each and every pup go to an appropriate home.
I AM trying to improve what I have in my SL female (my own line) by infusing the line with what I value and hold dear in a certain WL, and I have a very clear picture of what I want to achieve.
I am doing this for myself first and foremost, as I will keep at least one puppy.
The two very different lines came from one originally, and for me personally, that is the way it should be.
This is my own personal goal. I've got plenty of time, and am not in any sort of hurry... :-)

The real proof will be in what THAT progeny produce.
You can get some decent dogs from a SL/WL breeding,
that is already a given. It's whether or not they can
go on to maintain or improve what they bring to the table.

It's hard enough producing consistency/type etc in
"normal" breedings, but crossing two very distinct
different types will be even harder.

If hypothetically everything worked "right",
would you take that pup back to SL or WL?

There are more than a handful of SL's that have done well
in higher levels of sport, thats fact, but it's what those dogs in turn
produce when bred--usually it's not much of any consistency.

I personally think the lines have become far too separated to ever
have them "meet" again unfortunatley. 

But, all the best to anyone that wants to try!

It would depend on the dog(s) that I kept back. Whatever that dog brings to the table will determine where I go from there. I have a very distinct picture in my head, both physically and mentally. I realize that it will take generations to hope to achieve any sort of consistency, but that's ok, I've got the time. :-) Maybe it is too late to bring the two lines back to one, but I'll never know if I don't try.
