Can or should?
No you should not breed a pup, or a dog with hernia history.

What???

That can be a congenital defect or it can be from cutting the cord too short, or an injury, etc. I fail to see how that's a good reason not to breed a dog. If we're talking about a dog who continually produced gaping hernias that need to be surgically repaired, then maybe...but a regular old hernia that is small and closes on its own in weeks/months is not in that boat, imo.

I saw a pup's cord get caught on a toenail when the bitch was trying to bite it/cut it. It pulled it; he bled, and subsequently had a tiny hernia. It was gone by the time he went home. Are his genetics now skewed from that incident?

Breed whatever you like.

Oh, knock it off. Be rational. Explain that there is a difference between what is a delayed closure due to a physical incident and a true genetic defect. A condescending, judgmental remark like that leads the OP to think what I said is permissive of the latter, as it most certainly is not, as illustrated by my example.

I see you changed your first answer.

I changed nothing.
The word I used was history.
Not injury.
The question was about a pup.
I think the OP should avoid breeding for many reasons.
Sorry if you felt somehow slighted.
Moons.

You're being ridiculous. Why would I feel slighted?

The question wasn't whether the OP should breed. The question was pertaining to umbilical hernias being a DQ for breeding, and the answer is "it depends."

That is usually not genetic. There are several reasons this could happen. Usually they go away in young pups. They can occur from mom pulling to much when cutting the cord or as Jen stated.
