how often should a dog be tested for heartworm?
If the dog is on Heartworm preventative year 'round (all 12  months), every other year.  If you stop using the medication for any period of time, like winter, you need to test annually.

What most people do not realize is that the Preventative used actually is a heart worm killer.  By using it every 30 days you kill any immature heartworms in the dog's system before they have a chance to become lodged in the heart and grow.  So.. you kill what is there every 30 days.  This is why if you use your last dose on October 1st and the mosquito killing frost or snow occurs on October 15, and you do not follow up with a dose in November and December, your dog can develop heart worms from exposure between October 1 and October 15....

what pill do you use?
I was using Heartgard but now use Revolution spot on with a Preventic Collar.

where is the best place to buy the meds?
I get mine from the Vet.  Some vets will issue a prescription so you can buy the medication elsewhere or on line.  My vet charges me about the same amount as on line suppliers so that is who I go to (and support).    The medication needs to be prescribed because giving the meds to a dog that has adult  heartworms present can kill the dog when the parasites die and lodge in the dog's heart or arteries.

Forget all that, try IVERMECTIN=IVOMEC every other month and you will take care of all parasites, but 2 types of tape worms. Do test him before starting. Good luck

I buy from Best Value Pet Supplies. They have the most reasonable prices.
I use Proheart. I never test, just keep them on it year around

I try to test all my dogs annually in the spring and have them on preventative (I do my own with ivermectin) March - Nov if not all year (I live in Michigan).  I was using Heartgard but I don't like how low they've made the dosage (so as to avoid lawsuits if pets with the MDR-1 gene problem get sick) and it was too expensive.

The novice should just go to the vet to check the dog first and I prefer interceptor plus.
IVOMEC in the wrong dose can do long term harm.

Hi every one

I have a friend that breeds hunting dogs,he also owns a feed and tractor supply store.

His hounds are outside 12 months of the year. He gives the adults 3 qaurters od mil.
of evermectin 1%  may 15,  July 15, Sep.15,  Nov.15. thats four times a year. Some of his hounds are over 10 years old now. He gives it to then oraly. He also believes that it can be given every 3 months instead of 2.
Ivermectin is very cheap now in Canada the generic brand Noramectin can now be bought fore $16 for a 50 mil.bottle.
I rescued a German shepherd male pup that was not looked after or fed properly.
It was 7 months old when I rescued it.  It had a bad case of DEM.mange the vet put him on Advantage plus monthly doses, after 3 months there was no difference in the dog.  My friend from the feed store then put the pup on  evermectin 1% injectible, but given orally.  Here is what he did, For 8 days he gave the pup 1/2 mill every second day, note that after the 2nd dose a ball of worms came out of the pup that the once a month Advantage plus did not get rid of.   Now after the every second day dose,we went to every fourth day with the same dose for a month. By this time all the hair was back and the pup was happy and healthy. May I also add that we had the pup on Origen small breed puppy. May I also add that the pup never showed any negative reaction to the evermetin.May I also add,the mange has never returned.

Bear in mind that about 10% of German Shepherds carry the MDR1 mutation that makes ivermectin fatal.

Having just gone through heartworm treatment with my dog let me update some of the info here. My dog has been on heartworm preventative since he was 8 weeks old and became heartworm positive when Interceptor failed. Upon doing more research and info from my vet ALL heartworm meds , except the newest ones out ie Advantage multi etc, have failed, even Ivermectin. Dogs are now required to be heartworm tested yearly before the vet will renew the heartworm preventative. This was done since many of the meds are failing.  Many owners still use Ivermectin and do have success with it but you need to find out the correct dosing for your dog or damage can be done. Not pushing a site here but Leerburg has a ton of info on the latest heartworm info out there.

I have always used Heartgard Plus. So far I have never had a dog get heartworms. I order the Heartgard plus from Best Value Pet Supply. The price is CHEAP and so is the shipping.
