HIS COMPANIONSHIP TOWARDS ME WILL DETERIORATE...

How old are the dogs? It is a possibility the dogs will bond to each other if you are not doing your part to be their pack leader. However, I would weigh that possibility as the lesser evil, to being a dog left alone to his own devices, all day long. I'd opt for you getting both and ignore the negative comments of possibilities, until that time that you actually see the problem manifesting.

I'd also like to see what the real resident experts on this site have to say about this?

I'm not one of the resident experts Beetree was referring too :), but I'll give you my opinion! Of course there is a lot we don't know about you, your experience with dogs or your housing situation. If you are a new dog owner, you might want to consider getting the one dog, bonding with it and then get dog number 2. Or, you may find that dog number 1 doesn't need or want a companion.  Will you be home in the middle of the day to walk and spend time with your dog? I have two dogs now, but for many years I had one. He was just fine being the one and only dog in the house. The female we have now would be perfectly happy being the only dog, but our male desires companionship.  Taking on two dogs at once can be a lot to deal with for some people and it also depends on the energy level and temperament of the dogs. There is a lot to consider. Well, I don't know if I was of any help, but maybe I gave you some things to think about. Good luck and kudos to you for considering adoption!
