So I guess I never really realized that dogs can see pictures until a few days ago. I was at Petsmart with Buck, and "Little Dude" who turns 26 weeks tomorrow. I wanted to start taking him there so he can get use to even more places where dogs are. He is great on walks in the neighborhood, doesn't pay attention to the dogs he sees, but he was nervous at Petsmart. So Thursday we went in, he was nervous at first.......I walk in and let him get use to it all for a minute. Then we start walking around the store, telling him to do certain commands, etc. We would see a dog every once in a while, and I would ask for a command again. Well, we go into one lane and I stop. He fixates on something and then I look up and see this stand that has dog food in it. On the side of the stand there are three giant dogs just starting a hole through us. I walk him up to it (his hair was spiked and is never spiked when he sees a real dog) and he barked at it twice LOL. He sniffed the "dogs" and then he couldn't care less about it anymore. I think it was just the fact that three big dogs were giving him the stare down lol. I just never realized they could truly see it. I think my older dogs are just so use to things like that, that they don't pay attention to it.
He's coming along well though in training and in everything for the most part. We went back to Petsmart today and he didn't act nervous about any of the dogs or anything he saw. Buck, obviously couldn't care less about any of the dogs he sees. He's an adult and he's use to all of this. Little Dude does all of the commands I ask him, but there is something I've noticed in his temperament that is changing. When he was younger he was social with everyone. At almost 26 weeks he will work around people day long, no fear of people what-so-ever, doesn't mind them at all and has never had a bad experience with anyone. He does like little kids and will let them pet him though. However, he's starting to act like he doesn't want to be pet by people. Not in a fearful way, he turns his head to the side to avoid being pet. I don't mind that he isn't interested in being pet by people, and I've never actually had anyone pet without asking (For those wandering I do now tell people not to pet him after they ask, and I've never just let people come up crowding him and force petting him.). So now I just tell people they can pet Buck after they ask, but not Little Dude. It's interesting to see the differences between two brothers. Buck is very social and craves attention, but with clear judgment of who can and cannot be trusted, and I've trained him well also. He likes to shake peoples hands (seriously) too.
Did any of your guys pups ever start to not care to be pet by people you don't know? I do know many of you that do protection or other types of work don't allow your dogs to be pet by people you don't know, but those of you who do allow it...... Little Dude likes being pet and played with by my family, my nieces, and close friends, but he has a great calmness to him at such a young age. My brother and his wife came to visit not too long ago (Little Dude knows them well and they can even go as far to pick him up and he doesn't mind it) and even he said Little Dude acts like an adult dog, so calm. I guess having a few older pack members to learn from, 3-4 mile walks, and lots of training and playing each day doesn't hurt.
