10/3/2011 Condition Update:
While following info of a suspect vehicle Lakota and his handler Officer Fox were involved in a single car accident in which both Lakota and Officer Fox were ejected from the patrol car.
Officer Fox experienced severe but not life threatening injuries and is expecting a full recovery.
Lakota however did not fare as well and shattered his back right leg that has to be amputated. In addition he severely broke his back left leg and possible fractured a hip.
All his internal bleeding has successfully been stopped.
Lakota is currently being moved to University of Georgia animal hospital to undergo the necessary surgeries to give him a chance at a quality life after being injured in the line of duty. This medical care is estimated at over $10,000, since Lokata was injured in the line of duty, UGA is graciously doing the operations for around $4,500.
Lakota has served for 4 years with 80 successful apprehensions.
Please help save Lokata and give him the retired life he deserves by donating any amount you can spare to help cover his medical costs and retirement.
The department retired him when found out that he would no longer be workable and he is now ours along with all of his bills.

Employers ONLY think of the almighty dollar and nothing of LIFE...I can only hope that one day these people are put in the same position and are faced with these same decisions...
It's really ashame that even in the U.S. that it's come to this...No one cares about one another...they only care about themselves...
You get old...we get rid of you...
You get hurt...we get rid of you...
What a real shame that this Police Dept doesn't deem it necessary to take care of it's own...
I wish "Lakota" and "Officer Fox" all the best...and wish them both a fast recovery...

If the dog is considered an "officer", member of the force, WHY would he not have ALL the benefits the other officers do?
He was hurt while on duty ,was he not? Oh, I see, a single car accident. You can believe if it were the fault of the 'other'driver, full coverage would have been mandatory.
I may be wrong, but I don't think so. The dog should be covered under the police dept. policy.

I'm sorry I'm not in a position to be able to donate financially. But both Officer Fox and Lakota will be in my prayers and two fingers to the non-caring PD who couldn't give a toss about one of their own.

"County leaders voted to retire the dog, and the county is no longer responsible for its medical bills. The handlers are first given the option to take the dog, and if they don't, the dog would go to the county animal facility. The Fox family opted to keep and care for the dog."

This thread was started to rustle up some monetary support for this K-9 officer,
not to talk politics - image me passing up political talk (comments not necessary).......
Please send anything possible - pack lunch for a few days...skip Starbucks for a few days...serve up hotdogs or rice and beans instead of steak and potatoes.... send in whatever little bit was saved.... its a small sacrifice to come up with 5 or 10 bucks to help this dog.
There is time for slinging mud later - now is the time for support.
I happened upon the website and saw a need, I don't know the county, the police department, the dog or the handlers, nor do I handle any money. I saw a need and took minimal action by posting this.
