I just had to post this, as it was so funny!
We had an elderly spaniel in for boarding. He had a sensitive tummy, and developed diarrhea. The owner gave permission for us to give him medication.
I wrapped the pills in a piece of ham, and put them down in front of him. As the vet had said to fast him for 24 hours, earlier, we'd tried to pry his mouth open, and put them down his throat, but my partner nearly lost a finger doing this.
At first he ignored the ham. Then, he finally sniffed it, and picked up one of the pieces. Partway through chewing it, he spat the pill out. He then did exactly the same thing with the other piece of ham and pill.
When he was done, he looked me in the eye, and growled at me.
I tell ya, if looks could kill.... LOL!
Yes he was telling you "hey you can't fool me", lol.

Why can they not come up with ham flavoured pills? :)
Ham flavored pills!!! A friend of mine and I were just having this conversation! As i have one that also does not like to take them and a pissed of gsd is a little worse than a spaniel luckily she knows better I have to coat the pill in butter to make it slippery then shove it down her throat, hold her muzzle and sing marry had a ltitle lamb so I know it's been in there long enough and the whole time I'm thinking how flippin is it to make a meat flavored pilled??? LOL I might add if she is going to disregard the heir command it will be when I have a pill or my son thinks it's funny to hum a song while I'm calling her! so then I'm chasing her around the house with a buttery hand cursing and trying to grab her, ever try to pull a gsd out from under the couch that physics states she shouldn't fit under to begin with hands covered with butter??? I'm pretty sure she thinks it's funny! and alll it would take would be ham flavored pills!! LOL
I was very glad that the owners of the dog decided to come home 2 days early from their vacation, and take the dog home. I've gotten quite good at the 'ram it down the throat' technique over the years, but this guy wasn't having any of that, either! And I do value my fingers!
He's a bit of a bad actor. The previous owners of the kennel were so concerned about him biting us that they actually came back for part of one day just to groom him. He's been okay with the grooming so far, but this shows he can be a real problem if you do something to piss him off!
If you wanted to spend the money, you could go to a compounding pharmacy and get exactly what you're asking for.
My pharmacy does human and veterinary compounding, and offers fish, chicken, beef, cheese, and liver flavors for pet medication.
Sunsilver, that is why you coat it in butter! mine would hold it in her mouth FOREVER and not swallow it just use her tongue to bring it back up so when I let go she could spit it out. coat that in butter and it's too slippery to get back up! LOL Although i wouldn't get bit to do it.
Donnerstorm, that's EXACTLY what the problem was! The little b
@astard tried to bite our fingers off.
I use peanut butter. It works very well. I have 1 dog that just eats the pills plain. He's so food driven he doesn't stop to notice what they are, just throw them on the floor with a couple bits of kibble & wha-lah! Gone! jackie harris
