A lot of people are always asking the question..."Do You Prefer a Male or a Famale Dog and Why? So I'd like to hear other people's opinions on what they think about this and why do they say or prefer one sex over the other...
I'm talking about "in general"...either for Sport...Personal Protection...or Pets...

Male. Male. Male. I have an altered bitch as a pet, but that came as an accident. I like the masculinity, coat, build, and devotion a male displays.

I've never had males, personally. My dog was a female, as is my cat. We have had male dogs, *we have one right now, but he is my dads*, and both of them have just been dumb.... lazy... the one pissed everywhere... aggressive... but that was a mini poodle. Our current is a mutant shih tzu - yorkie and he is just lazy and retarded... he won't do a damn thing for you if you don't have food in your hand.

Long story short I've never personally had a good experience with a male dog, I've always just gotten females, but I'm sure the time will come.

Isn't that something. I'm just the opposite of you. Always the boys for me! I don't think sex really determines the intelligence. My clever boy keeps me on my toes!

LOL Dawulf, much of your experiences could be the breed.

I've read some of what people say about males such as their bond is closer, more protective of the person, and that is not the experience I've had at all. Mine have all been territorial, protective of the home, but not so much of me.

My female (first female I've had) is a velcro one man(woman) dog, very protective of property but also of me.

My favourite dog of all time was a male, but he loved truck rides so much, as soon as he got to know someone,  he'd hop it theirs, where as my female also loves truck rides, but will only hop in someone else's vehicle if I do, even if she knows them really well.

I know some say anyone's dog could be stolen, but I'd bet she can't.  If anyone wants to come try they can...

I think most of the individual traits is genetic.   If I could find a male that is like my female when it comes to loyalty I'd take a male, because this coming in heat business is a royal PIA.

I love both.  My male is more playful than my females and he is more loveable.   He can be very protective.  He is handsome with his plush coat and muscular frame.  He looks and sounds more intimidating than my females.

My females stick to me like glue and are very protective as well.   One of my females is the alpha dog and is the most intelligent of all of them.

My first three GSDs were female, the last three, male.  The females were more serious, easier to train, more attentive, IMO.  The boys, on the other hand, are playful, goofy, handsome.  I don't really like to alter and since my dogs are pets first and foremost, I prefer a male.  I too like the size, bone, strength, etc., but they don't come into heat.  Not saying that I'd never have a female, but right now I prefer the boys.

Drake is not a kissy kind of dog, he'd much rather be chasing something or tugging something than being petted or loved on.  He's big, messy, stinky at times and I wouldn't trade him for the world :)

Well...When I'm asked to explain each and how they are...I explain it this way:

FEMALES will tell a stranger to STAY RIGHT THERE...

...and...

MALES will tell a stranger to COME ON OVER HERE...

But...I've worked both Males and Females and I like both of them...they're just different from one another...I give the responsibility of protecting my kennel and my house to a FEMALE...NO doubt about it...

My favorite dogs of all time have all been Males...but I really enjoy working a good female...A female must be able to work through their Heat Cycle...and by that I mean they must be able to remember what they did the last time they worked...I've worked females where when they come into heat it's like they loose their brain and can't remember what we worked on last...

But I think if all boiled down...I'd say I prefer working a good female...

My experience is very much like Bob's. Totally agree. I also have little tolerance for females who can't work through their heat.

Kind of funny (unless you were handling a male at the show), but Capri was breed surveyed in heat. She will work right through it; if it weren't for a few drops of blood here and there (not often...she's clean as a cat)  you'd never know she was in heat. Qira is ok, too, though she occasionally vomits and doesn't seem to feel so well, though she by no means loses her mind or gets squirrely in any way...just doesn't seem to feel very good a couple days. I haven't had many females at all, only about 4, and only 2 for any length of time, so I guess I have been lucky w/my girls. I don't think heat cycles are that big of a deal.

I used to believe that the majority, not each and everyone and not written in stone, but the majority of dog/human relations were opposite sex. Something just seemed to gel that way.

I've had dogs all my life and always multiples, never had one just by them self. Around '85/'86 had a pair of Chows. The female, Sasha, was larger, heavier than the male, Ky-Lin. If I was sitting on the couch with a girl she would get between us. Stuck to me like glue. She meant business @ 85% of the time. I had a S-10 with rear sliding window. Sasha was always at my side. Ky-Lin was always in the bed of the truck. Even during the blizzards up in the mountains when we took road trips to see the storms. Once in a blue moon he'd come inside the truck. Ky-Lin would stick to me like glue also. Some ways the same others differently. He was a light boy but two times he got into fights, (One time the ex-wife threw a bunch of rib bones into the "group" of dogs. A rott we were dog sitting got into it with him and Ky-Lin put a hurtin on him. Another time, I was dating a German girl and next door to her house was a BIG Akita. It was as if they were enemies in their previous lives. The day they met the Akita was on a second floor balcony and Ky-Lin, the girlfriend and I were walking up her driveway. The two dogs communicated to each other and from that moment they did not like each other. One night they got into it and Ky-Lin put that dog in the hospital.

Now I have four GSDs, 3 personal and one service. 2 males, 2 females. The irony is EVERYONE wants my attention, always. The pup, Arabella, will move through everyone to sit between my legs and get one paw up to touch me. The Czech female, Anastacia, has to be with me every where, as soon as she hears the truck keys she's going off. She wants to be with me in the truck. I have to say she is the MOST loving dog I have ever had and I have had plenty. She can't lay next to you she has to lay IN you! But she is a serious girl, just as Bella is also. The males are great also. Reiker has been with me for almost 10 years and Ginno, almost three.

I could go on forever. I honestly feel I have been blessed by all good dogs, males or females. So, I have no preference. Everyone does either their job or what is expected of/from them. And it will be a terrible day when I lose one (and all) to old age or contract work is canceled.
