I found this ad for free training on the local (Green Bay, Wi) craigslist. I probably only live about an hour away but have never heard of this guy. I'm not suggesting the guy isn't legit, just have never heard of him. Thought I'd pass the ad along. Never expected to find an ad for free Schutzhund training on CL.

There is a catch there somewhere, you can be sure!

There's def gonna be a catch, I wouldn't think anybody that knew what they were doing and how much time and work that is would advertise on craigs list to do it for free.

I dunno...looking at the website, it certainly *reads* like he's got a solid background in the work, and with a breed that generally isn't that popular in the sport here in the US.  It kind of sounds like he's trying to get a club or at least a training group together; perhaps, since he wants to breed working Rotties, he recognizes that he'll need to build a reputation for himself in order to place his pups in the most suitable homes for their type.

Couldn't hurt to see what he's got to offer, if you lived nearby and are looking for someone to train with...

there's no catch. because of his schedule, he doesn't have time to commit to a club and is just looking for people to train with.

Some of you Guys are so untrusting it is unbelievable. I wonder if some of you ever can trust your own selves at times the way you think.
Here is a person offering his services FREE so you go to see him. What the heck if he starts talking money then walk away no big deal but not everyone is wanting something in return. Money wise.
The way i read it is he needs people to train with him and will give his services free to those who do.
I will tell you Guys this and no matter what you or anyone on here may say about it or think otherwise
YOU CANNOT TRAIN ALONE AND DO WELL, and this applies to a world champion or the novice person training you need help to put you right when you make mistakes and everyone makes mistakes no matter how long they have been training dogs and the dog needs others on the work field, the dog cannot do well and acclimatise training on its own if it is going into competition work and that statement applies to any one training dogs in a sport anywhere in the world.
Okay' i have rattled on a bit, but some of you Guys are a so untrusting in a scenario where you can lose nothing but gain so much makes me be so.
If the OP has any sense at all then she should snap his hands off for the chance she is getting and anyone else who is within driving distance of the one making the offer.

I do not know how your mind thinks but i can assure you there are some of us in this world who do not need to be paid for everything we do for others. and there are some genuine people about and i guess this Guy is one of them.
However he is not only doing it for other people to offer them free training help, He is also doing it for himself, simply the Guy knows that he to cannot train alone regardless of how much he may or may not know.
Let me just take this small example not that you probably need it but i will say it anyway.
You start off with your dog and you walk on and give the command to your dog to Down, and you walk on to the spot turn around, The Dog is in a down and you are happy, but what you did not know or see was that the dog moved and was sniffing the ground. So if you had known that you would have gone back to your dog and done the exercise again until the dog was perfect.
Now you will know what i mean by training alone.
Every day my brother and myself go to the Supermarket carpark before they open, there we do Obedience He stands as Judge and tells me what i am doing wrong or what the dog is doing when i am not in view of it i do the same for him
PLUS a very important think in training
If you train alone there is no distraction for your dog and if the dog does not get used to distractions then you will fail on the field of work when other people are close by because your dog is used to having only you no one else around when training.
Finally some time ago when the great Ronny van den Berghe was talking to me in Seville and i said about him winning the World Championship again 2010.
He replied I did not win 4 world championships on my own. Without the help of my club mates i would possibly have not won one title, Always remember you cannot train alone no matter how good you think you are the titles are there's as much as they are mine.  For me the words were Golden' and i pass on only what i have been told by a great Dog handler and Trainer.

steve, I do understand that many of us must seem to be overly cautious to you, but here are several examples of WHY so many of us have learned to be that cautious:

1. Tim Helser
2. Janice Bartmess
3. Vickie Lanig
4. Lorenzo Williams

All claimed and/or appeared to be knowledgable and trustworthy; all carry the blood of the dogs they neglected and caused to die in horrible ways, and all managed to mislead and con a lot of folks before being exposed for what they were.

Does that help you understand *why* many of us are suspicious when offers such as the one which initiated this thread are proffered?  I agree with you, though, that it's worth looking into if a person lives in that guy's general area...

I know full well about the people you have listed But you cannot put every one in the same category as those 4 people and to list them that is what you are doing.
The Guy simply asked if anyone would like some free instruction and it seems he needs people to work with him as per my above post, It is not in the same context of the 4 you mention.
If the OP goes and sees the Guy he will tell her what he wants if she is not happy then she can walk away no big deal except an hours travel for her each way.
For me it is well worth the trip to meet this person and see what he has to say and how he works.
The OP will know within 15 minutes of starting if it is a viable situation, However if the OP already has a Club of which she is happy with then ignore his post as his help is not needed in her case but anyone else would do well to look more into it if they live near the Guy.
And as far as i am concerned if you have not had any direct dealings with the people you name then you have not been hurt by them personally, it is the unfortunate animals that have suffered. But to mistrust someone just because of those 4 people is a bit out of the ordinary to say the least.
In life you have to give a certain amount of trust sometimes against your thoughts that is a part of living  This world is far from perfect and for me to live a life which is all hunky dory without mistakes and making mistakes myself in whatever form they are or have been, then to me i would never have lived a proper life.
